Effective cargo management is crucial for traversing the perilous terrain of Death Stranding 2 with minimal setbacks. This guide provides detailed instructions on how to access and utilize the cargo management system, optimize load distribution, customize your backpack, and increase carrying capacity over time.
If you learn these skills, delivery tasks will go more smoothly, and there will be less chance of falling and damaging equipment.

Accessing Cargo Management
Cargo management can be accessed at any time by opening the Ring Terminal via the Options button and selecting Cargo Management with the left D-Pad.
Holding down the Up D-Pad direction brings up the quick access menu, where you can choose Cargo Management. These choices let you check and adjust all carried things right away.
Understanding Cargo Capacity
The cargo capacity bar, located at the bottom right of the Cargo Management screen, indicates the current load percentage. Staying in the green zone allows for normal movement and steadiness.

When you cross into the yellow zone, you can't move as quickly and are more likely to fall. Staying below an ideal threshold improves the safety and speed of traversal.
Optimizing Cargo Arrangement
To achieve a balanced load, use the auto-arrange feature by holding Triangle. This automatically distributes weight for greater stability, though the visual placement may appear unconventional.
Manual positioning is also available, allowing strategic placement of bulky items such as the Ladder or Container Spray to suit personal preference and terrain requirements.
Offloading and Backpack Customization
Putting extra weight on the ground can help you move faster when you're facing enemies or steep hills. Things can be placed on the Cargo Shelf for a short time and then put back in the bag when they're not needed.

You can change the way a backpack looks and is put together, which makes it more valuable and attractive for different missions.
Improving Carry Capacity
Carry capacity increases automatically through repeated long-distance transportation of heavy loads.
In the Sam Stats menu, the Carry Capacity statistic rises as Sam completes strenuous deliveries. Gradual progression to higher levels allows for heavier loads and more efficient future deliveries.
Accessing Cargo Management Before Missions
Prior to accepting an order at any facility, the mission setup screen provides access to both Cargo Management and the Fabricator. Reviewing and adjusting load distribution at this stage ensures preparedness for upcoming terrain and enemy threats.
Mission Setup: Medical Unit Delivery

The mission to deliver Remote Medical Units requires careful weight management. After accepting the order, open Cargo Management to place each Remote Medical Unit in the backpack or hands or on the Cargo Shelf if needed.
Observe the weight percentage and experiment with auto-arrange to reduce the load from 51.2% to 42% capacity, ensuring efficient movement.
Managing Weight During Missions
Making necessary items, like Container Spray, helps keep things from getting damaged. Putting these things in easy-to-reach backpack places keeps them handy without affecting your balance.
Continuously monitor the cargo bar; approaching the yellow zone indicates the need to offload or rearrange items to avoid slowed movement and increased risk of fall.
