The Greatsword of Solitude stands as one of the most compelling new additions from the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.

This weapon boasts the reliable moveset mechanics of classic Greatswords, complemented by special qualities that make it particularly useful in both one-on-one and group fights.

Weapon Overview and Moveset

You'll find that the Greatsword of Solitude shares its moveset foundation with other Greatswords in the game, but with distinct advantages.

The vertical light attack serves as your primary tool for roll catching and executing Hyper Armor trades against aggressive opponents.

What sets this weapon apart is its horizontal slash heavy attack, which provides superior crowd control compared to thrust-based alternatives when facing multiple enemies simultaneously in Elden Ring.

The horizontal sweep allows you to engage several targets in a single motion, making it particularly valuable during outnumbered situations.

This attack pattern gives you tactical options that thrust-focused Greatswords cannot match when dealing with groups of enemies.

Ash of War: Solitary Moon Slash

The true power of this weapon lies in its unique Ash of War: Solitary Moon Slash. This skill operates in two distinct phases that work together to create devastating combat opportunities.

The initial activation launches a long-range projectile while providing you with Hyper Armor during the swing animation in Elden Ring.

This combination allows you to trade favorably with enemies at various distances while maintaining offensive pressure.

When you successfully stun an opponent at close range with the first part of the Ash of War, it creates a genuine combo opportunity with a follow-up light attack.

This mechanic transforms the weapon from a simple Greatsword into a burst damage dealer capable of quickly eliminating threats through guaranteed damage sequences.

You also have access to a heavy attack follow-up option, though this doesn't create a proper combo from the initial ash hit. Instead, you can use this follow-up as a delayed roll catch or spacing tool in Elden Ring.

The heavy follow-up includes a shoulder check that can stun enemies into the subsequent swing, giving you additional tactical options when opponents attempt to create distance after your initial ash activation.

Talisman Configuration

To maximize the weapon's combo potential, you should equip the Shard of Alexander and the Two-Handed Sword Talisman.

The Shard of Alexander enhances the damage output of the Ash of War’s initial projectile phase. At the same time, the Two-Handed Sword Talisman increases the damage of your follow-up light attack when wielding the weapon with both hands in Elden Ring.

This Talisman combination is meant to strike the actual combo sequence, which means that when you hit the ash and then follow up with a light attack, both hits will do the most damage.

The way these Talismans work with the weapon's mechanics makes it possible to deal a lot of burst damage in single engagements.

For the last few Talisman slots you have, use the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman for defense and the Erdtree's Favor +2 for general stat boosts that will help you stay alive and deal more damage in Elden Ring.

Defensive Capabilities

The Greatsword of Solitude possesses unusually high guard boost statistics compared to other weapons in its category.

When you compare its guard boost to standard Greatswords, you'll notice a significant improvement in blocking effectiveness.

The weapon even outperforms some Colossal weapons like the Fire Knight’s Greatsword in terms of guard boost values in Elden Ring.

The guard boost isn't as substantial as dedicated shields like the Twinbird Kite Shield, but it's better than shields like the Spiralhorn Shield.

This means the weapon can be used for defense when necessary, but it's best suited for offense rather than as a primary blocking tool.

Build Requirements and Scaling

Strength is the main thing that makes the weapon do more damage; therefore, it's perfect for builds that emphasize strength in Elden Ring.

You should invest most of your points into strength to get the most significant damage out of your weapon because this is the stat that scales Greatsword of Solitude the best.

If you arrange your stats in the appropriate areas, the strength scaling will increase your damage.

You can wear the complete Solitude Armor Set with the weapon to enhance its appearance and provide decent protection.

Combat Applications

In practice, you should use the Solitary Moon Slash as both an opening tool and a Hyper Armor trade option in Elden Ring.

The range of the projectile allows you to initiate combat from a safe distance. At the same time, the Hyper Armor properties let you trade through enemy attacks when they attempt to interrupt your combos.

When fighting one person at a time, focus on landing the Ash of War to set up the guaranteed light attack follow-up.

When fighting groups, use the horizontal heavy attacks to dominate a lot of enemies at once, as you look for chances to separate targets for your Ash of War combo.

The weapon works well in a lot of various situations, like boss fights where you need to do a lot of damage quickly and where you have to deal with a lot of different types of enemies in Elden Ring.
