Global RAM Supply Remains Uncertain Through 2028

Global RAM shortages could continue through 2028 as contract pricing, supply constraints, and market instability delay a return to normal.

RAM availability and pricing remain difficult to predict as supply contracts, company purchasing decisions, and market changes continue to affect the hardware market. The current situation could take time to correct, even if demand falls or new supply enters the market. The global RAM situation could remain difficult for some time.

One prediction suggests that if the situation is resolved before then, it would be surprising. Even if the market crashes, resetting supply and pricing could take a long time. A lot of the current situation also comes down to contract pricing. That means prices may not immediately change even when market conditions begin to shift.

Buying RAM Remains a Difficult Decision

There has also been discussion about whether China could help bring RAM prices down, but any effect would take time. Market changes can also happen slowly and then move all at once. A major insolvency or an Enron-scale crash at a single company could trigger a chain reaction across the market.

Some companies may face similar financial issues right now, making the situation hard to predict. For a company that builds many systems, deciding whether to buy and store a large amount of RAM is difficult. It would be hard to confidently argue that hoarding RAM right now is either a good decision or a bad decision.

Looking back, buying more might seem like the better decision because the hardware was purchased before prices moved higher. But buying more would also have created additional risk, and no one could have known what would happen. Fortunately, that decision worked out well. The extra laptops have already saved money and have effectively paid for multiple laptops through the savings.

RAM prices could also affect the cost of new laptops and other systems.

New back-to-school Chromebooks could become more expensive or offer less hardware for the same price. Framework no longer makes a Chromebook, which removes another option for replacing or repairing existing hardware. That makes the current market situation harder for anyone looking for affordable systems.

It's still hard to tell what will happen in the RAM market because supply contracts, buying decisions, company finances, and demand can all change prices. A downturn may happen, but no one knows when. The market may not fully reset until 2028.
