Going Medieval Guide | How to Mine
Here's a guide on how to mine in Going Medieval.

Going Medieval has a range of resources to gather, and not all of them sit on the surface. Things like Berries and Wood are easy to find above ground, but materials like Iron eventually run dry up top and you'll need to dig for more.
The game has underground building and mining mechanics that let you carve out proper mine shafts, held up with Pillars and Beams, where you can search for deposits of Clay, Limestone, Iron, and other materials. This guide covers what you need to know to get started.

Surface Resources Come First
Early in the game, mining isn't something you need to think about right away. Your first reason to dig underground will probably be building a Cellar to keep food cool during summer. It takes a while before you need the kind of ore output required to equip your settlers with proper armor and weapons.
Before going underground, look around the surface. Resources like Limestone often appear in small piles near the deposit they came from. You can use the Allow command to have your settlers pick these up without any digging needed. For smaller projects, surface gathering is enough to get by.

Mining Underground
Once surface deposits run out, you'll need to start digging. There's no map or indicator that tells you exactly where ore is hiding underground, so you have to dig and find out. Iron sometimes sits directly below Limestone, but that's not always the case. You'll need to explore to find what's there.
The approach that works best is to dig two layers down and then run mine shafts outward in different directions from there. As you extend those tunnels, make sure to place Beams and Pillars to support the space above. Without them, stability becomes a problem and the risk of a collapse goes up the further you dig.
