Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated game releases in years. With Rockstar Games preparing to deliver a significantly larger open world, improved visuals, and next-generation technology, many PC gamers are already wondering whether their current systems will be enough.

Looking back at GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar has consistently used its proprietary engine to push hardware forward, making system requirements a major point of discussion ahead of every launch.

GTA 6 Is Coming First to Consoles, While PC Players Have More Time

We recently talked about Windrose, the adventure pirate game that's kind of breaking the standards for AAA titles. But something arriving later this year is drawing even more attention: GTA 6.

If GTA 5 taught us anything, despite the many Grand Theft Auto titles that came before it, it's that Rockstar loves pushing hardware to its limits. GTA 6 is currently expected to launch in November, assuming there are no further delays. With the game being one of the most anticipated releases of the generation, the big question is whether you need to upgrade your PC or simply pick up a PlayStation 5 Pro.

Rockstar's biggest priority has always been consoles. That isn't because the company is anti-PC. It simply follows the money.

Why Rockstar Prioritizes Consoles Over PC

Gaming leaks have become a normal part of the industry, and GTA 6 has certainly had its share. While some are confirmed and others remain speculative, one thing has become increasingly clear: Rockstar is sticking to its traditional launch strategy.

The game will release on consoles first, then eventually arrive on PC roughly a year later. Rockstar isn't putting all of its effort into the PC version right now because the console launch comes first.

Interestingly, Rockstar was recently targeted by a hacking group that leaked internal earnings information. Rather than hurting the company, the leak actually boosted investor confidence. Once investors saw just how much revenue Rockstar continues to generate from a game that is now more than a decade old, the company's stock price climbed rather than fell.

According to the leaked figures, GTA Online generates approximately $6.3 million per week from PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, while the PC version generates around $4 million per week. That's still an enormous amount of money, but it clearly shows why Rockstar focuses on consoles first.

Because of that, although GTA 6 launches this November, the PC version is unlikely to arrive until sometime in 2027. That means you still have time before worrying about a hardware upgrade unless your upgrade plan simply involves buying a PlayStation 5 Pro.

Rockstar Wants to Serve Its Core Audience First

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently explained why Rockstar continues releasing on consoles before PC. When asked why the company wasn't launching on PC immediately, despite the platform's strength, he explained that Rockstar always starts with consoles because it wants to fully serve its core audience before expanding to additional platforms.

In other words, Rockstar follows the largest audience first. That isn't necessarily bad news for PC gamers. Instead of rushing out a half-finished PC port alongside the console version, Rockstar has additional time to properly optimize the game before bringing it to computers. Given how rough some recent console-to-PC ports have been, taking the extra development time could ultimately benefit everyone.

Leaked GTA 6 PC System Requirements

Although Rockstar has not officially confirmed PC specifications, several leaks have suggested what players may need once the PC version finally launches.

Minimum Requirements

The leaked minimum specifications include:

  • Intel Core i5-9600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • NVIDIA GTX 1660 or AMD RX 5600 XT
  • 16GB RAM
  • 150GB of storage
  • Windows 10 or newer

These specifications would simply allow the game to run. They are not expected to provide an especially enjoyable experience.

Recommended Requirements

The leaked recommended specifications are considerably higher:

  • Intel Core i7-12700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
  • NVIDIA RTX 3070 or AMD RX 6700 XT
  • 32GB RAM
  • 150GB of storage
  • Windows 11

Some additional recommendations even mention processors such as the Intel Core i5-13600KF alongside graphics cards like the RTX 4070 Ti or RTX 4060 Ti. Regardless of the exact hardware, having as much VRAM as possible will likely benefit players running higher settings.

Rockstar Always Builds for Current and Future Hardware

One of Rockstar's biggest strengths is how its proprietary engine evolves between generations. When GTA 5 originally launched, it supported aging hardware while also preparing for the next-generation consoles arriving shortly afterward.

Today, the situation is somewhat different. The PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro are already available, while next-generation console hardware is beginning to appear on the horizon. If future PlayStation hardware already exists in prototype form, Rockstar is almost certainly working alongside Sony and AMD engineers to ensure its engine scales well.

That future-focused development also benefits the eventual PC release by allowing newer graphics technologies to be utilized more effectively.

Steam Hardware Trends Paint an Interesting Picture

If the leaked requirements are accurate, GTA 6 may not be the most demanding game ever released. However, anyone already struggling with GTA 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2 could very well need an upgrade.

The Steam Hardware Survey recently showed that the RTX 3060 has finally overtaken the GTX 1060 as the most commonly used graphics card among PC gamers. While some people question the accuracy of Steam's survey, it still represents one of the largest collections of real-world gaming hardware available.

On the processor side, approximately 54% of Steam users continue using Intel CPUs. That figure covers multiple generations of processors, but it also highlights how much AMD has closed the gap compared to several years ago, when Intel dominated the market much more heavily.

Looking Back at GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2

Understanding Rockstar's hardware progression becomes easier when comparing previous releases. GTA 5's minimum requirements included an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or AMD Phenom 9850, 4GB RAM, and either a GeForce 9800 GT or Radeon HD 4870 with just 1GB of VRAM. Recommended specifications increased to an Intel Core i5-3470 or AMD FX-8350, 8 GB of RAM, and a graphics card with 2 GB of VRAM.

Red Dead Redemption 2 significantly increased those demands. Minimum specifications jumped to an Intel Core i5-2500K, 8GB RAM, and either a GTX 770 2GB or Radeon R9 280 3GB. Recommended hardware included an Intel Core i7-4770K or Ryzen 5 1500X, 12GB RAM, and either a GTX 1060 6GB or Radeon RX 480 4GB.

Comparing those games to GTA 6's leaked requirements shows another major leap forward. The rumored minimum now starts with a Core i5-9600K or Ryzen 5 3600, with 16GB of RAM, while the recommended configuration climbs to a Core i7-12700K or Ryzen 7 5800X, with 32GB of RAM and an RTX 3070 or RX 6700 XT.

Even then, those recommendations are intended for medium-to-high settings rather than fully maxed-out visuals. Ultra settings will almost certainly require significantly more powerful hardware.

Waiting Could Be the Smartest Upgrade Strategy

The good news is that PC players still have plenty of time before GTA 6 actually arrives on the platform. Hardware pricing has already begun trending downward, and by the time the PC version launches in 2027, you may be able to purchase much faster components for the same budget.

If you're planning a new gaming build specifically for GTA 6, waiting could ultimately deliver far better value than upgrading immediately. On the other hand, if you simply want to play the game at launch, a PlayStation 5 Pro remains the quickest and likely most affordable option.
