GTA 6 Performance Expectations on PS5 Pro and Current Generation Consoles

GTA 6 remains a technical mystery due to Rockstar’s proprietary engine and the unprecedented scale of its open world.

More and more people agree that Grand Theft Auto 6 will run at 30 fps on regular consoles. It should run better on next-gen hardware and PCs. Still, it's not clear if there will be other performance modes.

The game has been pushed back a whole year, which has led to fresh conjecture about whether Rockstar has utilized that extra time to look into more ambitious alternatives, especially for higher-end platform versions.

Case for a PS5 Pro 40fps VRR Mode

We really like the notion of a 40fps VRR option on the PS5 Pro. It seems reasonable to think that Rockstar and Sony are working closely together on the technical side of things because GTA 6 is so big, and most of the people who will play it will do so on PlayStation 5 consoles.

If Sony gets to run the advertising for GTA 6, it would make sense for there to be a mode or feature that makes the PlayStation version the greatest location to play.

The 40fps VRR option would probably come from the 30fps setting, but with a frame rate that can be changed and some changes to the resolution. It's much harder to say if it will be more appealing than a 60fps mode that doesn't work. Even educated guesses are hard to make at this point.

Rockstar’s Engine Remains a Mystery

The main problem with guessing how GTA 6 will run is that we don't know anything about Rockstar's current engine. If this were a big Unreal Engine game, we could make better guesses based on what we know about how it works. Instead, we're working with a brand-new version of Rockstar's tech.

There might be some similarities between GTA 5 and this one; however, GTA 5 is still based on design from 2013, even after years of technical improvements. GTA 6 is a whole new thing. We can't draw any useful insights from Red Dead Redemption 2 because its open world is set up and works very differently.

We really don't know what the final performance profile will look like because of this. There isn't any solid proof that Rockstar will add a 60fps setting, but they may still surprise everyone.

Visual Fidelity vs. CPU Limitations

A 40fps mode doesn't sound too bad on paper, given how ambitious the visuals are currently. But the main problem is with the CPU. Frame rate scaling is harder if GTA 6 is mostly a simulation. In such a case, just having a powerful GPU wouldn't be enough to reach greater performance goals.

We think that if the game starts with a stable 30fps, that would be a big accomplishment. If Rockstar's past is any guide, that would probably make the launch of GTA 6 the smoothest one ever. The frame rate stability at launch was really bad in previous games in the series, such as GTA 4 and GTA 5. Even older generations had the same problems. A locked and steady 30 fps would already be a big step forward.

How Much Headroom Does PS5 Pro Really Have?

When it comes to hardware, the differences between consoles from the current generation are not very big. Performance ranges by about 15% across the board, and the PS5 Pro has a clock speed bump of about 10% in at least one mode compared to the original PS5. That is a long way from the 33% boost that is usually needed to go from a consistent 30fps to a stable 40fps when the CPU is constrained.

We can presume that Rockstar is implementing strong GPU scalability into the engine because the game needs to be able to run at 30 fps on less powerful hardware. If the PS5 Pro can get 40 fps, it makes you wonder why the PS5 or Series X couldn't have the same performance with lower graphics settings. That situation doesn't seem too far-fetched.

Bigger Question: Image Reconstruction Technology

We think the most significant point is how Rockstar chooses to approach image reconstruction, not just frame rate. If GTA 6 comes out with next-generation PSSR2 and it has image quality that is on level with recent options while still running smoothly, that might be a much stronger selling point than a 40fps setting.

If Rockstar uses more traditional methods like TAA and older upscaling methods, on the other hand, the overall experience may not be as revolutionary. A good PSSR2 solution might make images clearer and more stable, especially on high-end hardware like the PS5 Pro.

Why a 60fps Mode Is Unlikely

In principle, there is a big difference between 30fps and 60fps, and some other games have done it before. We don't think Rockstar would go that way, though. If the 60fps mode were to fail, it would probably lead to an uneven and unpleasant experience, which goes against Rockstar's long-standing goals.

Rockstar has a long history of putting graphic realism and environment simulation first. They might be the only studio that could release a game that only runs at 30 fps and have most people be okay with it. Many players would probably understand and accept that choice, given the technical and graphic achievements that are promised from GTA 6.

If Rockstar makes a game that looks great, is technically challenging, and runs at a steady 30 fps, it might be enough to make GTA 6 a landmark release.
