A recent report from The Game Business claimed that Obsidian Entertainment had joined a growing list of Xbox studios reportedly fighting to avoid closure. The report immediately caused panic among Xbox fans because Obsidian remains one of the most respected RPG developers in the industry. The studio is responsible for major titles such as Avowed, The Outer Worlds, Fallout New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Alpha Protocol, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2.
Because of that history, many players struggled to believe that Microsoft would even consider shutting down the studio. However, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier later pushed back against the claims. Schreier stated that Obsidian is not currently negotiating to avoid closure and that Microsoft still plans to keep the studio within Xbox Game Studios.

Xbox layoffs and studio uncertainty continue growing.
While Obsidian may be safe for now, concerns about Xbox Studios have not disappeared. Schreier also noted that the broader details surrounding Microsoft’s layoffs and restructuring plans remain unclear. The original report mentioned several other Xbox studios, including Ninja Theory, Compulsion Games, Double Fine, and Undead Labs.
According to The Game Business, multiple teams were reportedly negotiating with Microsoft to avoid potential shutdowns or major restructuring. That report also referenced additional unnamed studios, creating fears that the situation inside Xbox could be larger than what has publicly surfaced so far. Many developers are reportedly unsure about Microsoft Gaming's future direction.
Microsoft’s biggest franchises are putting pressure on the company internally. Reports suggest that some Xbox developers feel they are being judged against impossible financial expectations created by Microsoft’s largest gaming franchises. Call of Duty reportedly remains one of the biggest factors behind internal concerns.
Christopher Dring from The Game Business explained that even major successes from studios like Obsidian may not significantly impact Microsoft’s overall gaming business compared to franchises such as Call of Duty, Minecraft, Candy Crush, and Warcraft. That situation creates a difficult environment for smaller creative studios.
Teams like Double Fine, Ninja Theory, and Compulsion Games were never built to compete financially with billion-dollar franchises backed by Activision Blizzard and King. The thinking among many developers is that those studios are valuable for their creativity, prestige, and unique experiences, not just for their raw sales numbers. But in restructuring, corporations tend to focus on measurable financial performance.
Halo is reportedly being heavily reevaluated by Microsoft.
Amid the wider Xbox uncertainty, insider Jez Corden reported that Microsoft is closely reevaluating how Halo is currently managed. According to Corden, Microsoft is taking a very serious look at the franchise's future direction. Halo remains one of the most important brands in Xbox history. The series helped define the original Xbox and played a major role in establishing Microsoft within the console industry.
Reports suggest that Xbox Studios are on edge, but there are no rumors of the closure of Halo Studios at the moment. Instead, Microsoft may actually be preparing to invest more heavily in Halo while restructuring other parts of the Xbox business.

Halo’s PS5 release could become a major turning point.
One of the most exciting developments around Halo is the upcoming release of Halo Combat Evolved on PS5. After decades of platform rivalry, the concept of Halo on PlayStation remains hard to believe for many gamers. The PS5 launch will be a crucial test for Microsoft’s changing approach, with reports indicating the company will be watching sales, player engagement, and how Halo performs on other platforms.
If Halo proves to be a great hit on PlayStation, Microsoft could be under even more pressure to keep bringing Xbox franchises to other platforms. The financial potential of reaching PlayStation players may become difficult to ignore.
Xbox’s multiplatform strategy still feels unclear.
The larger issue surrounding Xbox right now is the lack of a clearly defined long-term strategy. Some Microsoft titles remain exclusive to Xbox platforms, while others are moving toward multiplatform releases. That uncertainty has created confusion among fans regarding the future identity of Xbox itself.
Many players are unsure whether Microsoft still views Xbox consoles as the center of its gaming business or simply one part of a larger ecosystem. Halo’s arrival on PS5 may ultimately become one of the most important moments in Xbox history. The release could determine whether Microsoft fully embraces a multiplatform future or eventually returns to a more traditional exclusivity-focused strategy.
For now, Xbox is in a period of transition marked by layoffs, restructuring, and major questions about the future of some of gaming’s most recognizable franchises.
