How to Make Tons of Gold with Transmog in World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft is home to a mind-blowing variety of items, from powerful weapons and armor to fun toys and adorable battle pets. Many players make it their mission to collect as many of these treasures as possible, and some die-hard collectors are often willing to buy WoW gold and spend millions just to get their hands on the pieces they're missing. You probably already know this, but did you know you can actually make a lot of gold from this passion for collecting?

Today, we'll walk you through everything you need to know about making gold with transmogs, so you can have a steady income and keep your sales rolling in week after week.

Transmog in World of Warcraft

How Does Transmog Selling Work?

In World of Warcraft, transmogrification (or simply "transmog") allows players to change the appearance of their gear without affecting its stats. Transmog items drop from mobs and bosses in both the open world and inside instances, so all you need to do is loot them and sell them on the Auction House.

Transmog gear is highly sought after by collectors who are trying to unlock every appearance in the game. Most of them would rather buy specific looks from the Auction House than farm dozens of mobs and dungeons for a tiny chance at a rare drop. On top of that, many transmog pieces have very low drop rates, which makes them super rare and also quite pricey, allowing you to make insane amounts of gold with consistent sales.

How Do You Make Gold with Transmogs?

The first thing you need to keep in mind is that transmog gold-making is a bit slower than selling other items like reagents, crafting materials, or even regular BoEs. You won't get instant sales, and some items might sit on the Auction House for days or even weeks before the right buyer comes along.

But the good news is that you can make your sales steady and reliable if you think of it as running a real shop. Let's take clothes, for instance. If you only sell red shirts, you'll only ever attract the few people who are specifically looking for a red shirt.

But if you stock shirts in every color—and not just shirts, but also pants, boots, hats, and more—you'll appeal to a much bigger pool of buyers, and your chances of making sales will go up a ton. See what we're getting at, right? The thing with transmog selling is to offer as much variety as possible, so players browsing the Auction House have more to choose from in your listings.

A good target is around 1,000 unique appearances. (But note that this means 1,000 different looks, not 1,000 copies of the same item.) The quality of your items also matters. Higher-tier pieces sell for more gold, and some particular looks are in much bigger demand than others.

In the next sections, we'll cover exactly which items are worth targeting so you can focus your farming time on pieces that'll actually make you profit.

Which Transmogs Sell Best?

Ideally, you should list any transmog piece worth over 5,000 gold, but you can lower the minimum to around 2,000 gold.

The easiest way to check item prices without having to look them up manually on the Auction House every time is to use an add-on called Loot Appraiser. This tool automatically pulls pricing data straight from the Auction House and shows you item values in real time as you loot.

You can set it to play a sound alert whenever you pick up an item above a specific gold threshold (for example, any drop over 2,000 or 5,000 gold). This way, you'll always know exactly when you've found something valuable to sell and won't lose it in all those piles of loot you'll be getting during your farming sessions.

Best Locations for Transmog Farming

In this section, we'll cover several go-to farming spots that work well for both beginners and more experienced players looking to diversify their routine.

Zul'Farrak

In Zul'Farrak, you'll find plenty of greens like the Jade Plate set, Bloodforged set, and Glorious set, which are all worth a decent amount and sell relatively well. You'll also pick up lots of blues such as Blackmetal Cape, Spellshock Leggings, Brainlash, Gutwrencher, Bloodletter Scalpel, The Minotaur, Witch Doctor's Cane, Flaming Incinerator, and Troll Protector. And if you're lucky, you might even snag a couple of rare purples like Robes of Insight or Skullflame Shield.

The best thing about this dungeon is that you can run a nice full lap from start to finish, no matter which side you begin from.

Dire Maul

This is a very fast and effective farm: you go in, jump down, pull all the mobs in the area, clear them out, then reset the instance and repeat. Noteworthy items here include Fiery War Axe, Staff of Jordan, Orphic Bracers, Elemental Raiment, Phasing Boots, Stonebark Gauntlets, Wand of Arcane Potency, and others.

Dire Maul is an excellent dungeon for gold-making overall because you'll also loot a ton of herbs, resources, and green BoEs that sell for some really nice extra profit.

Blackrock Depths

This dungeon has an array of quite lucrative items to hunt down. Transmogs you should keep an eye out for here include Battlechaser's Greaves, Blisterbane Wrap, Stoneshield Cloak, Mar Alom's Grip, Braincage, Ribsplitter, The Spire of the Stoneshaper, and others, most of which often go for over 100,000 gold per piece on the Auction House.

This farm can get even more efficient if you're running it on a character with the Mining profession to gather Dark Iron Ore and sell it for extra gold.

Uldaman

Uldaman is a fantastic location for transmog farming, offering items that can sell for up to several million gold each.

Some of the big-ticket goodies you can find here are Pendulum of Doom, Digmaster 5000, Miner's Hat of the Deep, Spaulders of a Lost Age, Papal Fez, and The Jackhammer. There are also plenty of less pricey but still valuable pieces like Legguards of the Vault, Stonevault Shiv, Beacon of Hope, and many others.

The farming route can be a bit confusing since the dungeon is basically a maze. There's no single set route, so your main goal is to just make your way to the last boss while pulling all the mobs along the way. Also, don't forget to loot the final chest behind the last boss before you reset the instance, as it has a chance to drop some really pricey old-world stuff.

Scarlet Monastery

Scarlet Monastery is a very short and straightforward instance, yet it's home to plenty of high-value items like the Archon Chestpiece, Tainted Pierce, Flintrock Shoulders, and Scarlet Boots, all of which can sell for a truckload of gold. You'll also find a range of mid-tier pieces that drop more frequently and also tend to sell quite well on the Auction House.

Silithus Cultist Farm

If you're not really into dungeons, then this open-world farm should definitely be the first on your list. All you have to do is make your way to Twilight Base Camp in Silithus and run laps around the area, killing and looting mobs along the way.

This spot is an absolute paradise for transmog farmers. Here, you have a chance to pick up some big shots like Teebu's Blazing Longsword and Skullflame Shield, and also come across other solid mid-tier mogs like Glorious Legplates or Stonerender Gauntlets, which can all bring in a nice chunk of gold.
