Finding the Plant Near the Starter Location

In front of your starting area, right near the ship you spawn next to, you'll find a small plant scattered all around. It grows in pretty much every direction close to the start, so it's not hard to spot. Grab this plant and place it on your hotbar, since you'll need it for the next step.

Getting Milk From the Cow

In that same starting area, look for a Cow. Place three of the plants down in front of it, and it will give you one milk. Place another three, and it drops another milk. Wait a bit between drops if you want more. Drinking the milk gives you both food and water, making it the fastest way to stock up on water early in Scrap Mechanic.

Other Ways to Get Water

Eating fruit works too, though it barely gives any water compared to milk. Soda is another option, and you can find bottles of it scattered randomly inside chests around the world, but you can't count on finding it consistently. Milk stays the most reliable choice since you can stack it up and carry it with you, so you're not stuck searching for water every time you need it.
