AM5 Upgrade Worth It in 2026: Ryzen 7800X3D vs. 5700X3D Gaming Performance

AM5 delivers stronger 1% lows, improved frame pacing, and better CPU utilization in demanding modern games.

PC players often consider upgrading from the AMD AM4 to the newer AMD AM5 platform, especially since the new Ryzen 7000 X3D processors are great for gaming.

Even though AM5 is better in terms of platform lifespan, DDR5 compatibility, and improved CPU speed, AM4 is still a great choice for a modern gaming platform. In the end, the decision will depend on the hardware already in place, the game's purpose, and upgrade plans.

Changing AM4 to AM5

We have recently acquired a secondhand Ryzen 7 7800X3D at a good price and have decided to upgrade our AM4 to AM5. The new system is an ASRock B650 PG Riptide motherboard coupled with 32GB of G.Skill Ripjaws DDR5-6000 memory. We had a Ryzen 7 5700X3D with 32 GB of DDR4-3600 RAM. Palit GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super is the same graphics card used by both systems.

Already capable of providing an outstanding 1440p gaming experience, the Ryzen 7 5700X3D and RTX 4070 Ti Super combination, purchased back in December 2024, delivered excellent 1440p gaming performance. It could comfortably play modern games at ultra settings, though titles with ray tracing and path tracing, like Cyberpunk 2077, still required DLSS and Frame Generation to play at higher refresh rates.

Before DDR5 prices increased in October 2025, we had upgraded, and the transition was far easier in terms of financial costs. Waiting could be the wiser course at present DDR5 prices.

Real-World Gaming Performance

Instead of a direct comparison of AM4 and AM5, the emphasis here is on the experience of upgrading and using the same GPU. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 with Epic settings and DLSS Quality, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D consistently achieved higher frame rates than the Ryzen 7 5700X3D. More to the point, lows of 1% were significantly reduced, and the gameplay became much smoother. The older footage was captured on a previous game patch, but the performance difference is still evident.

Monster Hunter Wilds imposes a heavy load on the CPU and is therefore an ideal test of platform differences. With DLSS Quality and Frame Generation settings set at Ultra settings, average performance had improved between about 110fps and 130fps. There was also an increase in CPU and GM usage, even on 1440p. Ryzen 7 7800X3D maintained a strong lead without Frame Generation. The improvement will be felt instantly in CPU-heavy situations such as this one.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 was one of the least problematic experiences during testing. The system ran 90fps to 100fps with 1% lows of about 74fps, when running at Ultra settings with TAA, which is effectively native resolution. Frame times were very consistent, resulting in extremely smooth gameplay. Although in some places, performance can drop to the 60fps to 70fps range, the overall performance is stable and responsive. The game appears crisp and executes as anticipated.

Will AM5 Differ?

Ryzen 7 5700X3D is a very powerful gaming processor, particularly when paired with an RTX 4070 Ti Super. It can still comfortably run modern games at the highest settings at 1440p and well above 60fps.

Nevertheless, the DDR5 memory and the Ryzen 7 7800X3D do offer some tangible improvements. We find higher average frame rates, higher CPU usage, and more consistent 1 percent lows. This can prove particularly beneficial in games whose performance is limited by the CPU, which has become increasingly common in recent releases.

Should You Upgrade?

With 1440p gaming at 60fps, there is no need to upgrade to AM5 with an existing AM4 system, whether it's a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or a Ryzen 7 5800X3D. The difference between the performances is typically within a narrow range, often just a few frames per second. The loss from 5 fps to 10 fps is not a huge drop when you are already well beyond 60 fps.

Conversely, when you want stronger 1% lows, better overall consistency, or intend to upgrade to a faster GPU in the future, AM5 and the Ryzen 7 7800X3D are decidedly better. We have found the upgrade to be valuable, but only in that the CPU was bought at a good price and that DDR5 remains affordable.

Ryzen 7 5700X3D is one of the best-value gaming CPUs available.

For most gamers, particularly those aiming for 1440p at 60 fps or higher, it will make economic sense to stay on AM4. When you are assembling a new PC, AM5 is a no-brainer. If you already have a good AM4 system, it is more prudent to wait until DDR5 prices normalize. The platform upgrade should perform better and improve longevity, but it is not necessary for everyone at the moment.
