Details on two forthcoming portable gaming devices—the ROG Ally 2 and a purported Xbox handheld—have been made public by recent FCC leaks. These leaks, which provide information on APUs, battery sizes, and other topics, seem to be authentic. The exact cost is still unknown.

Two variants are probably in the works: a white one with a lower-end APU and a smaller battery, and a black one with a larger battery and a higher-end APU. Particularly notable for its hardware innovations is the ROG Ally 2, codenamed RC73X1.

ROG Ally 2 Hardware Specifications

The ROG Ally 2 will feature the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme, paired with 32GB LPDDR5X running at 8533MHz and a 99Wh battery, just under the TSA limit. The Ryzen Z2 Extreme is capable of up to 36W, likely in dock mode.

It offers 8 cores, 16 threads, and up to 5GHz, with a 16 CU RDNA 3.5 iGPU. For comparison, the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX370 has 12 cores, 24 threads, and the same iGPU, reaching 5.1GHz. GPU clock speeds for the Z2 Extreme are expected to match the HX 370’s 2900MHz.

Test Setup and Methodology

We utilized an HX370 small PC to estimate performance. RAM was only able to operate at 8000MHz, which was a little slower than the anticipated Ally 2 memory. To better resemble the Z2 Extreme, four cores were turned off, and TDP was restricted to limits that were manageable with a mobile device.

Cyberpunk 2077 Testing

Performance was close to 60 fps with 17W TDP and the Steam Deck default of 720p. Similar frame rates were maintained by raising the resolution to 900p and the TDP to 25W.

Stable gameplay and a respectable battery life were maintained while enabling frame generation at 1080p with a 20W TDP, which increased frame rates to the mid-80s and occasionally approached 100 fps.

Borderlands 3 Performance

At 900p low settings and 20W TDP, the game held close to 60fps despite occasional hitching caused by recent driver updates. This setup remained playable and consistent.

Spider-Man 2 Performance

Running at 900p low settings with FSR balanced and frame generation allowed frame rates into the 90s. Without frame generation, maintaining 60 fps at these settings was challenging. Lowering resolution and FSR settings could stabilize performance further.

Benchmark Comparisons at 15W TDP

Cyberpunk 2077

At a 15W TDP in Cyberpunk 2077 (720p, Steam Deck preset), the Steam Deck OLED achieved 44 fps, the ROG Ally X reached 53 fps, and the modified HX 370 managed 57 fps.

In general performance tests, the modified HX 370 consistently outperformed both the Steam Deck OLED and ROG Ally X at equal wattages, indicating that the Z2 Extreme will have a significant edge at lower TDPs.

Black Myth: Wukong Benchmark

Results showed that the modified HX 370 outperformed other handhelds at 15W TDP, with the Steam Deck OLED attaining 49 frames per second, the ROG Ally X hitting 59 fps, and the modified HX 370 producing 80 fps. Consistency was verified by repeated testing, with all devices having frame generation turned off.

Expected Performance Gains

We can expect the Z2 Extreme to outperform the Z1 Extreme and Steam Deck, especially with its likely improved memory controller and faster LPDDR5X. All confirmed Z2 Extreme devices, including the Lenovo Legion Go 2 and ROG Ally 2, will ship with Windows. As soon as SteamOS becomes compatible with the HX 370, further Linux-based comparisons will be conducted.

Final Thoughts

With superior performance at lower TDPs than other portable APUs, the Ryzen Z2 Extreme has great promise for handheld gaming.

Both the Lenovo Legion Go 2 and the ROG Ally 2 are ready to provide a top-notch portable gaming experience thanks to their enhanced battery capacity, quicker RAM, and Windows optimization.
