Ryzen 79850X3D Launch Brings Minor Gaming Performance Boost Over 9800X3D

AMD quietly introduced the Ryzen 79850X3D with higher clock speeds while keeping the same core design and power limits.

Instead of gaming devices, CES presentations are now more focused on AI, investors, and messages to shareholders. Recent announcements made this trend clearer, and there wasn't much talk about new gaming-related parts.

One of the worries before was whether it would be worth it to go to CES. There were ideas about building links, but no one offered to pay for them. It cost about $2,000 out of pocket for travel, hotels, and other expenses.

It was the proper choice not to go. Most of the big talks from Nvidia and AMD were on AI. Public sessions didn't have much for gamers, and Nvidia timed its GeForce keynote for 12 A.M. EST, which made it seem like they weren't too sure about the launch.

AMD's Quiet CPU News

AMD showed off a new gaming CPU, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, but only to a small group. This announcement was not part of the main speech. There had already been leaks about the chip and rumors about a 9950X3D2 model. The goal was to make a version with 3D V-Cache on both CCDs to fix the core-parking issues that occurred with the 9950X3D. There was no announcement about that model.

Official Specs for the 9850X3D

Ryzen 7 9850X3D is an 8-core, 16-thread Zen5 desktop CPU with 96MB of L3 cache, which includes 64MB of stacked 3D V-Cache, according to Videocardz and Hardware Unboxed. The primary difference is the clock speed, which may reach 5.6GHz instead of 5.2GHz on the 9800X3D. Leaks also showed that the base clock was 4.7GHz and the TDP was 120W, which is the same as the previous model's power class. AMD hasn't said how much it will cost or when it will come out, only that it will be available in Q1 2026.

How well it works in Gaming

AMD says that the 9850X3D is 27% faster than Intel's Core Ultra 9285K in games. The business also said that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 sales increased by 5% and Baldur's Gate 3 sales increased by 60%. Ryzen 99950X3D was not mentioned at the CES conference, and there was no talk about prices.

Overview of Hardware Unboxed Slides

More slides from Hardware Unboxed indicate that the 9850X3D has the same number of cores and threads as the 9800X3D. The TDP stays at 120W, the cache stays at 104MB, and the platform support continues the same with AM5 and DDR5. The only thing better is that the boost clock goes up to 5.6GHz.

Both CPUs have 8 cores and 16 threads, a 104 MB cache, and a TDP of 120W, as seen in side-by-side comparisons. 9850X3D just runs faster.

Breakdown of Benchmark Comparisons

AMD's own slides show that the 9800X3D is 24% quicker than Intel's 285K in several titles. 9850X3D raises that lead to 27%. That is an average improvement of 3%. Some games indicate 2%, some 3% or 4%, and a few even reach 6% to 8%. Hogwarts Legacy goes up by 6%, Counter-Strike2 goes up by 8%, and Baldur's Gate3 goes up by 7%. Most titles are still close to the average of 3%.

Concerns about product positioning

9850X3D is just a 9800X3D overclocked. Simultaneously launching both models raises questions about their positioning. If both are still available, there is no reason to have two different SKUs. To avoid confusion, it might be best to stop making the 9800X3D.

Final Thoughts

AMD's X3D processors have always been great for Gaming, and many people have spent a lot of money on them. 9850X3D, on the other hand, doesn't make any significant changes beyond the clock speed. Most people will get the same results with the 9800X3D. Now we turn our attention to Nvidia's presentation to see if the new GPU announcements will be more useful for gamers.
