People are talking a lot about how much the new Steam Machine will cost when it comes out. But as the expected release date gets closer, more rumors have started to spread about price, how affordable it will be, and what hardware it will have. There isn't any official word on prices yet, but rumors about possible bundle deals and hardware prices keep getting people's attention.

The price point is one of the most common subjects about the Steam Machine. With the release fast approaching, more discussions are cropping up. It's possible the Summer Games Fest remains the best bet for Valve to announce something, maybe at the same time as reservations or other platform announcements.

Not only is the price point being discussed, but it's also being argued about. It's not clear where Valve will place the hardware. Some are making Steam Machine-style PCs and trying to work out what Steam is expected to cost internally, but it's not proving to be a conclusive method.

Expectations are Set by Four Bundle Rumors

The rumored four-bundle plan has brought changes in the eyes of many when considering potential pricing. The 512GB model without a controller might be released for $600, and with a controller, around $700, based on those talks.

The 2TB option is available, which may end up around $900 or $1000 with or without the controller. With those rumored bundle combinations, the base price of $600 to $700 seems more reasonable, at this point.

Steam Deck's Pricing is Causing Some Issues with Comparisons

An interesting aspect of the Steam Machine versus the Steam Deck OLED is the comparison between them. Before the OLED model went out of stock, it was priced at around $679. That said, it is hard to see how the Steam Machine will reach the Steam Deck price point or lower.

The base Steam Deck was offered at $450-$500, but the OLED version sold for a higher price. As the Steam Machine is supposed to be six times as powerful as the Steam Deck, it seems unlikely to be priced lower than the Steam Deck.

The absence of components might reduce manufacturing expenses. Meanwhile, the Steam Machine isn't getting some of the costly hardware components that Steam plans to keep on the Steam Deck. No built-in battery, no display, no OLED panel, and no design to address handheld-specific needs. Those parts are saved in the manufacturing process.

But with the screen and battery removed, the hardware requires much more performance than the Steam Deck. Presumably, the system is geared towards desktop-level gaming performance, meaning that Valve still requires higher-end internal components.

RAM Prices and Hardware Costs Remain an Issue

Another concern about pricing expectations is the high cost of PC hardware these days. The cost of RAM remains high, and component prices remain inconsistent across the industry. Some builders online claim they can construct similar systems for approximately $550. Still, they typically use a sales tactic to secure a discount, use used components, or offer a short-term promotion.

Valve is unique because it buys components in bulk and has to deal with manufacturing, logistics, and retail expenses at a much larger scale. Therefore, it might not be advisable to match the prices of enthusiast-built PCs.

But many still hope that Valve will heavily discount the Steam Machine to make it more affordable. This would make the system more attractive for gaming on traditional game consoles and PCs, thereby increasing the platform's overall value. However, price increases are affecting several industries, and it remains to be seen how much Valve will be willing to invest in hardware.

Now priced in the $650-$700 area for the base seems more possible than $550, and a launch target.

Steam Machine saga is still playing out, and there is hope that Valve will have more news to announce soon. But one of the primary unanswered questions is still pricing, particularly regarding the rumored bundles and performance expectations, as well as comparisons to the OLED Steam Deck.

In the meantime, opinions are divided between those who look forward to a more competitive price and those who think Valve will continue to push the Steam Machine toward a more gaming-expensive product.
