Used GPU Prices Rising as DLSS 4.5 Boosts RTX 40-Series Value

DLSS4.5 improves RTX 40-series performance, changing how older GPUs compare in the current resale market.

Old graphics cards are now more or less impossible to find because of new upscaling technology and changes in their prices and availability. It's harder to get high-end GPUs now, especially the RTX 50 series. This has changed the way people used to think about what was valuable.

Prices on resale sites show less supply, longer holding times, and higher fees, so it's more important than ever to buy things that you need.

The Market Tracking Method

Every two weeks, we check the prices of used GPUs by looking at completed listings on major resale sites. Most buyers and sellers use these sales to gauge fair prices. This data shows what most customers go through, even when they can find better deals through private channels.

Market behavior is now more like real estate tendencies, where prices stay high because there isn't enough supply, and timing is more important than ever. Instead of telling people not to buy things at all, pricing targets are now suggested to help people decide what to buy. There are no terrible graphics cards, only bad costs.

A Look at the RTX 50 Series

The price of the RTX 5090 has increased, while unit sales have decreased. The best time to buy was months ago. Now, listings are riskier due to fraud and untrustworthy vendors. You shouldn't buy used RTX 5090 cards unless you trust the seller.

RTX 5080 is still the best high-end gaming option. Prices have gone up, but if you can get one for under $1300, it's a great deal, especially because it performs like a 4090 with a little less VRAM when overclocked. New units frequently cost more than $1500, so secondhand ones are a good deal at the right price.

RTX 5070 Ti caused many problems in the market. Used prices have gone up because there are fewer of them. At this time, buying old things is not a good idea. It is best to wait for the market to stabilize. New units are still the best choice, or you may also look at similar AMD versions.

You can still buy the RTX 5070 at its full price, but used versions need to save you at least $100–$120 to offset the lack of warranty. A reasonable price to aim for is about $430.

There are so many new RTX 50-series cards out there that it doesn't make sense to buy used ones like the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, RTX 5060 Ti 8GB, and RTX 5060.

Reassessment of the RTX 40 Series

RTX 4090's value keeps rising, and its price is closely tied to that of the RTX 5090. There is still a high risk of scams; buying secondhand items is not a good idea.

Around $800, the RTX 4080 Super becomes a good deal. Performance is better than the RTX 5070 Ti, and DLSS 4.5 support adds value over time. If you can't get to fresh deals in your area, secondhand options make sense. RTX 4080 works the same way, and $750 is a good price to pay. RTX 4070TiSuper works like a more powerful RTX 5070. Depending on the current price of the RTX 5070, $600 is a fair price.

RTX 4070Ti and RTX 4070 Super should not cost more than $450. New RTX 5070 cards are more enticing because they cost more. DLSS4.5 has made the RTX 4070 worth more. At $400, it's a great purchase and better than older high-end cards like the RTX 3080 10 GB because it supports modern upscaling. We don't recommend the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB. It doesn't perform much better than RTX 30-series cards, and you can get better value elsewhere.

Decline of the RTX 30 Series

Prices are high because there is strong demand for the RTX 3090 and RTX 3090 Ti for AI workloads. RTX 3090 should cost $600, and the RTX 3090 Ti should cost $700, but neither supports DLSS4.5, which makes them less appealing.

RTX 3080 Ti is still quite powerful, almost as powerful as the RTX 3090. If DLSS4.5 isn't a big deal for you, $400 is a fair price. RTX 3080 10GB is still a good deal at $300; however, it might be better to pay extra for an RTX 40-series card with DLSS4.5.

We don't recommend the RTX 3070 Ti. You shouldn't pay more than $150 for an RTX 3070 or RTX 3060 Ti. RTX 2080 Ti is still the superior choice, though.

At its current pricing, the RTX 3060 12GB isn't worth it. It would need to drop to about $125 to be competitive. Lower-end RTX 30-series cards don't move much and aren't worth much compared to other options.

Focus on the RTX 20 Series

RTX 2080 Ti has 11GB of VRAM and more CUDA cores than the RTX 3070, which makes it stand out. It works with DLSS and is still robust at about $200. We aim to test DLSS4.5 more.

Because they don't have as good a performance-to-price ratio, we don't recommend other RTX 20-series devices. GTX 1080 Ti is still a good deal at $100. Most games still work fine, and their resale value remains the same even though driver support has declined.

AMD RDNA4 and RDNA3: You should buy fresh RDNA4 GPUs because they are reasonably priced and come with a warranty. RX 9700 XT is the best high-end AMD choice. RDNA3 is not as good as it used to be. If you don't care about ray tracing, the RX 7900 XT X for $600 is fine, but the RX 9070 XT for $100 more is a better deal.

RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 GRE are only worth it if they cost between $400 and $425. The RX 7800 XT for $300 and the RX 7700 XT for $200 are okay, but not the best. RX 7600 and RX 7600 XT would have to drop to $100 to be worth it.

AMD RDNA2 Power

RX 6900 XT and RX 6950 XT are still great for $325–$350. Their raw power lets you play games at 1440p without upscaling. Ray tracing is still weak, but brute-force rendering makes up for it.

RX 6700 XT costs $175 and offers a good amount of VRAM and competitive performance. There are better options in the same price range than the RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT. RX 6600 and RX 6600 XT aren't worth it unless they cost less than $100. RX 5700 XT is old and should only be bought for under $80.

Best Value Picks Right Now

The best value options right now are the RTX 4070 for less than $400, the RTX 2080 Ti for about $200, the GTX 1080 Ti for about $100, and the RX 6900 XT and RX 6950 XT for about $325–$350.

New RTX 5070 cards offer better long-term value than cards costing more than $500, unless high-end RTX 4080 deals become easier to find.

Final Thoughts

DLSS 4.5 has changed the way GPUs are judged. RTX 40 series cards are now a better value than many RTX 30 series cards. RTX 40-series market has reopened due to rising costs for the RTX 5070 Ti. AMD RDNA 2 cards are still great at raster performance and don't cost too much. Because market conditions fluctuate so frequently, it's important to keep an eye on prices constantly. There are no terrible GPUs; the costs are too high.
