Valve Explains Steam Controller Pricing, Hardware Goals, and Future Steam Device Plans

Valve positioned the Steam Controller between standard gamepads and premium devices through functionality-focused hardware decisions.

Valve's recent talk about the Steam Controller, Steam Deck, and future devices shed some light on the company's stance on gaming devices, platforms, and software support. The discussion also included whether Valve should be seen as a hardware company, what future Steam products would look like, and why the company missed demand for its latest controller at launch.

One of the primary subjects was to see how the new Steam Controller would fit into the market. The controller wasn't meant to beat the big boys, nor was it meant to be a standard controller," said Valve.

Valve says the priority was to get the flexibility and functionality, not the luxury of cosmetic materials. The controller features TMR thumbsticks, dual trackpads, grip sensors, and four back buttons. The goal of these enhancements was to offer additional input options without pushing the price into the premium-controller range.

There are many reasons for the controller, which differ from those of other companies, Valve said. Repairability was a key consideration throughout the design process, and the hardware was designed to be easily opened and serviced. There were concerns about battery life and ergonomics as well, particularly for players between Steam Deck and docked play sessions.

The Steam Controller falls in between Standard and Premium

The conversation recognized that certain features on the premium controller were missing, such as changeable sticks and a metal design. The plastic shell was compared to the Steam Deck's material finish multiple times before the more expensive controllers were used.

Despite those compromises, the overall sentiment throughout the discussion was that the Steam Controller is more feature-rich than a standard controller and doesn't cost nearly as much as a fully-fledged controller. The $99 price point was said to be right between the two. Describe yourself in three words, using only words from the set Valve has prepared.

An even bigger issue was who Valve was. In this talk, Valve discussed three paths it would take: game development, Steam, and hardware. The three areas are all in place to enable gamer experiences," writes Valve. The company says that hardware is just another way to enhance gameplay on SteamOS.

The discussion even asked whether Valve could still be a “hardware company” given its paltry number of devices. In contrast to traditional hardware manufacturers, Valve releases its games infrequently and tends to target more specialized audiences than mass-market sales.

The fact that the company has ceased making hardware does not mean it will become unsuccessful; it would be argued. Steam remains the company's storefront, ecosystem, and main platform. The dialogue extended to a discussion of Valve's relationship with other platforms, such as PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, positioning the company more as a platform than a traditional hardware maker.

Valve's Reputation is Still Being Defined

Soon, the subject turned to Valve's game output. The company is still working on projects such as Counter-Strike 2 and Deadlock, but the discussion moved to the fact that Valve has a similar release pace for games as it does for hardware. Nevertheless, older Valve games continue to impact the gaming world. Examples of games that are still relevant years later were discussed, such as Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, and Half-Life 2.

Furthermore, there was concern that younger generations would never see the return of older Valve titles unless the company brought them back with newer versions. Many players are still waiting for a return to single-player Half-Life 3, while Half-Life Alyx was cited as an example of Valve's return to single-player games. Valve games are examples that shape the industry in the same way that large-scale open-world games shape their genre, the discussion said.

Steam Deck's Success has Reinvigorated Valve's Hardware Attempts

Valve also spoke about how the Steam Deck will impact the company's hardware plans going forward. The Steam Deck had been a concept for years before the technology was ready, the company says. Valve said that they felt they had made improvements to the APUs, power efficiency, SteamOS, and software support, and the Steam Deck was finally moving forward.

After the Steam Deck's success, it seems Valve began working on other hardware concepts for the ecosystem. Docked games were in demand, and given the idea of more powerful machines, it was clear there was a need for something like the rumored Steam Machine or Steam Frame. The discussion implied that Valve develops multiple hardware concepts simultaneously rather than following a linear development plan.

Some projects are implemented, and some are kept on the experimental side or canceled. But rather than following a linear path, Valve's hardware strategy seems to shift as it becomes technically feasible and catches on in-house. Valve had some controller issues with launching Steam. Valve had some problems with the Steam controller launch.

Valve also tackled a few issues with the Steam Controller launch.

The company said it had underestimated demand and that many of its customers' buying experiences on launch day were poor. In its case, Valve said it had ample stock to meet demand, particularly given that it claims it produced far more than during previous hardware launches. Yet the stock quickly sold out after the sale.

When asked if it would be likely to implement a reservation policy from the outset if it could resume the launch process, the firm said it would. Valve also hinted that they'd likely see reservation systems on future hardware releases.

The talk mentioned that the Steam Deck had already been 100% booked during its launch window, but at the time, there were more supply issues. New games such as Steam Machine and Steam Frame are now anticipated to follow suit. Despite the launch problems, the discussion highlighted that Valve acted promptly by adding additional reservation waves and re-availability as soon as the issue was raised.
