Blizzard's team hero shooter Overwatch has always been one of the more lore-heavy online games because of its comic books and dedicated team members. With a recent tweet, Blizzard has shown that there is still much to be revealed in terms of Overwatch lore, confirming a new novel based on characters from the game. One of the team members behind the Overwatch game, Nicky Drayden, is also a well-known author who has begun working on the novel.
The novel has been in development since October 2019, though the original relase date was expected to be around early May 2020. Because of the recent pandemic, as well as the introduction of new heroes to the game since the announcement of this book, the Overwatch team has been busy and forced to push back their novel's debut. However, this tweet from Tuesday, May 26 reminds fans about the novel, and players are more ready than ever.
Despite the sixteen issues of Overwatch comics that have already been published since the game's release, players are still lacking the lore that they would like to see concerning their favorite characters, and it seems like Blizzard is happy to oblige. Although the comics still offer a significant amount of in-depth stories about the characters, the dedication that the Overwatch team is showing towards this new novel reveals that there is more to the characters of Numbani, such as Orisa, Doomfist and Lucio.
With this novel may come new characters and map changes, or this may just be another way for fans to learn more about the heroes that they are playing, and how they used to interact with the world around them. The novel allows for much more in-depth description and creativity within the world of Overwatch than the comics do, specifically because the type of writing is so drastically different between these mediums. Throughout the novel, readers will be shown an increase in character development as Orisa learns to protect her city, even though she is still newly-built and learning how to best use her abilities. This is even supported by her in-game voice line, "I'm still new at this." Despite Orisa being "new at this" since her debut in 2017, players will finally be able to watch the omnic tank hero learn who she is and how she can best protect her friends.
Overwatch is currently available for PC, Playstation 4, XBox One and Switch.
