State of Play August 2020 - Godfall Combat Deep Dive

Gearbox and Counterplay are cooking up something stellar

Today, during Sony’s State of Play livestream, Gearbox and Counterplay Game showed off their upcoming “Looter-Slasher” game, Godfall. The trailer revolved heavily around combat within the game. The game will feature online co-op and heavily relies on loot-based progression. The world is split into four elemental realms, and everything you see in these trailers will be available day one, and nothing will be locked behind microtransactions.

Godfall: A hulking opponent is ready to battle.

Gameplay itself was meant to combine action-rpg loot progression and hack-and-slash skill. The developers wanted loot to matter just as much as a player’s skill in the game. Players are meant to dominate combat and be aggressive, and are rewarded for this. Players will be able to use one of five different classes of weapons: Long Swords, Dual Blades, Pole Arms, the Two Handed Warhammer, and the Two Handed Greatsword. Each weapon and each weapon category is unique and can be modified in detail.

Today’s trailer focused on Dual Blades and Longswords. Dual Blades are the fastest weapons in the game, and work best against unarmored opponents. Longswords, on the other hand, are meant to be simple and reliable. They are similar to the Dual Blades, but have their own unique moves. The trailer also discussed the shields, a major component to player survival. The shield is both an offensive and defensive weapon, which can be thrown or used for various unique attacks or finishing moves.

The trailer culminated in a showcase of just a portion of a battle against one single challenging enemy. The hulking opponent wields a large hammer, and the player in the trailer uses the longsword. This bit of gameplay gives a clear idea of what Counterplay is trying to create.
