Heroes Of The Storm Originally Had 'Towns' With Different Units And A Mayor

An interview with a former Heroes Of The Storm developer revealed some of the game's history.

A few days ago, a classic game development quirk popped up in Heroes of the Storm. Developer Blizzard’s arena multiplayer title left a message in to one of their designer, stating: “This is a problem, please let Justin know.” This bug rose to popularity, much like the, now meme-worthy, message in Hitman: Blood Money, where an item simply stated: “Allan, please add details.” On reddit, the community rallied for the origin of the error and successfully requested an “ask me anything” open forum with senior technical designer, Justin Klinchuch.

In the post, Klinchuch revealed some of the original ideas for Heroes of the Storm, which eventually did not make it to the final release of the free-to-play game. For instance, teams had much more elaborate base mechanisms at one point, as the designer explains:

One of the crazier ideas I remember was our first implementation of "towns". It was our first attempt to move away from just a single tower, to having more things to kill. The first iteration was nuts though; we had buildings that were spawning different kinds of units, and even a "mayor" that would come out and kick your ass if you attacked the town hall.

Klinchuch also briefly chimed in to the original reception to Heroes of the Storm. When asked what they thought of online publication IGN giving the arena game an initial review score of 6.5 out of 10, the developer simply answered: “My thoughts were srsly?! wtf!”

To be fair, Heroes of the Storm did grow considerably throughout the years. In particular, 2016 has seen a ton of growth for the PC game, receiving frequent updates and a lot of new characters, which Klinchuch also recognizes, stating:

The game has come so far since then that it's hard to imagine wanting to play one of those old versions.

Recent heroes to join the roster include Ragnaros, Zul’jin and Valeera. Most of these additions have some pretty unique talents. In particular, Ragnaros is a lot of fun, with an ultimate gimmick that sends lava pouring down an entire map lane. Other updates have added heroes from Blizzard’s currently most popular title, Overwatch. Tracer and Zarya both received fairly faithful adaptations in Heroes of the Storm.

Since their time as a Blizzard employee, Justin Klinchuch has moved on to independent game development, working on Defend The Cake, in the tower defense genre. That project is looking towards a PC release on Steam and also mobile platforms later on.

Quite like Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm is holding a special rooster event; which, unfortunately, isn’t as good. There’s plenty more in that game to enjoy, luckily.
