Call of Duty Elite nets huge subscription numbers

We already know Call of Duty is massively successful, but how is its social gaming platform faring? The answer, to the surprise of few, is quite well.

After six days, Activision Publishing sold 1 million premium Call of Duty Elite memberships. For those in need of perspective, similar premium services, offered by the likes of Netflix, Sirius XM and Xbox LIVE took about a year each to hit 1 million.

"The audience response to Call of Duty Elite's premium service has been beyond our expectations, and we want to thank Call of Duty players around the world for their unprecedented enthusiasm," said Bobby Kotick, Activision Blizzard’s CEO.  "The number of gamers who have registered for Call of Duty Elite further illustrates how this service is poised to redefine social gaming and set a new bar for interactive entertainment."

As American as baseball, apple pie and absurd amounts of ammunition.

Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, said the demand for Call of Duty Elite was initially so overwhelming that the service wasn’t performing to fans’ standards. In light of those issues, premium Founder members received an additional 30 days of the service for free.

Call of Duty Elite offers members contests for real and virtual prizes, stat-tracking, the ability to create and level clans and original programming like Friday Night Fights, an RSA Films-produced series in which real-life rivals face off in multiplayer matches.

“Fans of Call of Duty spend as much time playing the game, as sports fans spend following their favorite teams—if not more. So we figured, if sports fans get all kinds of shows outside of the games to feed their passion, why not do the same thing for Call of Duty fans?" Hirshberg said.
