Dark Souls publisher may drop Games For Windows Live following backlash

Not long after the much-requested PC port of Dark Souls got announced, publisher Namco Bandai revealed it would be using Games for Windows Live to power the PC release. This in turn made those who petitioned for a PC release to now petition for ditching Games for Windows Live in favor of literally anything else, because apparently GFWL is an afront to all things right in the world.

Silly as it may seem, Namco has taken notice of the 20,00 signature outcry, presumably because they, unlike everyone else, actually care about Internet petitions. Said Dark Souls Producer and Director Hidetaka Miyazaki at an interview session at Namco Bandai's Global Gamer Day in Las Vegas: "We are aware of the petition against Games for Windows Live, but that's a more publishing side of the question."

A Namco Bandai representive followed up Miyazaki's comments by saying, "For Games for Windows Live, that's the established server we used for our 360 version for the console - that is the main reason that we've picked the Xbox Live server. The partnership is still ongoing, so we might have another announcement regarding publishing."

None of this hints toward any actual change coming in the wake of the anti-GFWL movement, but that they're taking notice at all is in and of itself important, as most companies just brush off the existence of such things.

Today also sparked more vitriol from the fact that Dark Souls won't receive any optimizations for the PC version. It's to be a straight-up console port. That means no graphical configurations, limited keyboard support, and the game being locked at 30 frames. None of that will likely see changem either, lest Namco Bandai wish to miss their August 24th release date.
