God of War: Laufey Physical Disc Confirmation Reassures Fans

Fans are cheering over a physical disc confirmation that was never really in doubt, and that reaction alone tells us everything about where gaming is headed.

If you have followed the consequences that have resulted from Sony's decision to cease Blu-ray disc production come January 2028, then you are already aware of how complicated things have become. When the company first released this news in July, it was through a brief three-paragraph post on its blog and nothing more.

The company did not respond to the comments left below the post, nor did it follow up on its announcement. Now, whenever the company makes a post, be it for new games or accessories, the comment sections are filled with disgruntlement about the removal of physical media.

The most fascinating part is the trend that has developed from all the chaos.

The studios have realized that talking about physical discs for their games makes people engage. Take the case of Mouse: P.I. For Hire, which received an overwhelming response due to the mention of a 40 FPS game mode along with a physical disc on Switch 2.

Similarly, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered saw an overwhelming response when there was news about a physical cartridge of the game on Switch 2. That puts Sony's own first-party studios in a strange spot. It would be awkward for them to hype up physical releases right after their parent company announced it's scaling back Sony Blu-ray discs almost entirely.

Yet that's basically what's been happening. Insomniac Games posted about Wolverine being available on disc a week before Sony's announcement even dropped, though that timing lined up more with the separate conversation around GTA 6 reportedly shipping as a code in the box rather than a full physical disc.

Then came the bigger moment. Sony Santa Monica posted about God of War: Laufey, inviting fans to a San Diego Comic-Con panel on July 24th featuring game director Ariel Lawrence and head of creative Cory Barlog, along with cast members sharing behind-the-scenes details.

The sheer scale of the reaction reveals something worth paying attention to.

About thirty minutes later, a second post confirmed that God of War: Laufey would be available on disc. That single follow-up blew up online, racking up over 54,000 likes and more than two and a half million views, with people expressing genuine relief and excitement.

The key point here is that God of War: Laufey was always slated to be available on physical discs from the start. The title is not expected to launch until some point during the first half of 2027, well ahead of the cut-off period of January 2028 set by Sony for reducing Blu-ray disc manufacturing.

According to the company, everything that launches prior to this period will see continued physical disc releases as usual, with disc manufacturing reduced to just 10 percent after that, mostly in an effort to print reprints for previously launched titles. Nothing has really changed.

That reaction says a lot about the mood among gamers, and possibly among developers too. You have to wonder whether every studio under Sony is actually on board with a fully digital future. Financially, it makes sense for the company.

If sales lean more digital, studios likely see better margins and possibly easier approval for future projects.

There's less concern over retail costs and manufacturing overhead tied to Sony Blu-ray discs. But there's clearly something studios value beyond the numbers. After spending years developing such a game as God of War: Laufey, holding a copy of it in your hands, perhaps putting it in a frame somewhere, must carry some significance. The physical manifestation of all that hard work surely has its own meaning.

And this seems to have been what made Sony Santa Monica feel compelled to issue such a quick clarification on the physical disc, despite there being no doubt about it at all. None of this necessarily means Sony Santa Monica is pushing back against Sony's broader strategy.

But it does raise real questions about how other studios, especially the more creatively driven ones, actually feel about a future where physical media quietly fades out. For now, at least, God of War: Laufey is confirmed for a physical disc, and that's about as much certainty as anyone's getting out of Sony these days.
