Kojima Finishes Physint Script as XBOX OD Rolls Out Quietly

New details point to a quieter OD rollout and a much more developed Physint, with filming already planned and Kojima's story in place.

Kojima has offered fresh details on both OD and Physint, and the updates make it clear that both projects are moving forward in very different ways. While OD is being kept unusually secret, Physint appears to be further along behind the scenes than some recent rumors suggested.

Kojima has already said OD is meant to remain a surprise, so don't expect the kind of regular showcases that have accompanied some of his previous games. Instead, you may only see small trailers, short gameplay clips, or occasional details before launch. That approach makes sense for a project built around mystery, especially when knowing too much could take away from the experience.

Secrecy suits OD's mystery, but marketing, audience, and reputation complicate the plan.

Still, Microsoft and XBOX have a practical reason to show something. OD is being developed in collaboration with XBOX, and a game like this will need at least some marketing before release. Completely hiding it until launch would be risky, even if the developer is one of the few whose name can generate attention without a huge advertising campaign.

That could work particularly well if the game gets strong reviews. The developer has built a large following over the years, and a well-received surprise release could create plenty of discussion on its own. The bigger challenge is the XBOX audience. He has traditionally been closely associated with PlayStation, so an XBOX console exclusive could require some PlayStation players to move to Xbox or simply choose the PC version.

That situation may not be quite as difficult as it would have been several years ago. Frustration among some PlayStation fans toward Sony could potentially make the audience more open to playing a project from the developer elsewhere. Still, limited marketing could make it harder to reach people who are not already following the game closely.

From your perspective as a player, however, the lack of information could actually be one of OD’s biggest strengths. Going into the game without knowing its major ideas, mechanics, or story details could make the first playthrough more rewarding. If players respond strongly once it arrives, the mystery surrounding it could also become part of the game's appeal.

Another factor hangs over the project: the so-called XBOX tax.

The idea is that games associated with XBOX can receive harsher reactions or less benefit of the doubt from parts of the gaming media and audience. Keeping expectations controlled before launch could therefore be useful, particularly for a game that is deliberately trying to surprise people.

Between the two projects, though, Physint remains the more anticipated one for many longtime Kojima fans, especially those with a strong connection to Metal Gear Solid. The appeal is straightforward: you get the creator back in the world of stealth and espionage, but with modern hardware and a chance to approach the formula in a new way.

Recent speculation had raised concerns about how far along Physint actually was, with some claims suggesting that very little had been done. The latest information paints a different picture. He has now explained that the project draws on the roots of the Metal Gear series while also aiming to create a different kind of spy-action experience. He already has the plot prepared and wants to bring plenty of new ideas into the game.

The casting process also appears to be well underway. Bill Skarsgård, Charlee Fraser, and Minami Hamabe have already been scanned for the project, while filming is scheduled to begin next year. Other roles have reportedly been cast as well, although their identities are being kept secret for now.

He also revealed that roughly 70% of the cast so far are fans of his work, including several major names.

Many character names are already set, while others are still being decided. Rather than handing the project to a casting team, the developer personally pitched the game to the actors, showing how directly involved he is in assembling the project.

Perhaps the most important detail is that the story is already written. That directly counters recent rumors claiming the plot wasn't ready. Physint is still probably several years away, but it is clearly not an untouched project sitting at the starting line.

OD is likely to remain the main priority for now, especially since Death Stranding 2 was only recently completed. Even so, the work happening on the project shows that the developer has been preparing for it for some time.

He has described the game as a project marking his 40th anniversary in the games industry, and he approaches each game as though it could be his last. That makes the project feel particularly significant. You may still have a long wait ahead, but the latest details suggest Physint is much further along than the rumors made it sound, while OD is deliberately keeping its biggest secrets hidden.
