With Modern Warfare 4 less than two weeks away from launch, the focus is quickly shifting to what comes after the campaign. While early campaign access is getting closer, the long-awaited DMZ mode has finally received its first official trailer, and Tit reveals more about the new extraction shooter.

DMZ originally appeared as a beta with Modern Warfare 2, but Modern Warfare 4 is turning it into a full standalone mode. The biggest question has been why Activision waited so long to show what DMZ is about properly. The answer now seems fairly straightforward: spoilers.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Trailer

DMZ takes place directly after the Modern Warfare 4 campaign, so the state of its world depends heavily on what happens during the story. The new worldbuilder trailer finally gives you a look at what happened in Hajin, where DMZ takes place, while also filling in some of the events surrounding the North Korean invasion and the aftermath.

The trailer opens with a mysterious voice saying that they have the means to destabilize the zones through a preemptive strike.

That voice belongs to Mads Mikkelsen's character, who has been connected to a group known as the Archer in the Modern Warfare 4 campaign. The line matters because it immediately connects the events of DMZ to what happens throughout the main campaign.

To understand why, you first need to look at the story of Modern Warfare 4. The campaign begins in South Korea, where you play as a group of South Korean and American soldiers working together in a joint operation. Things quickly escalate when North Korea launches an invasion, turning the region into a warzone.

The area shown during that opening conflict is Hajin, the same location that becomes the setting for DMZ. However, the invasion isn't the entire story. Events involving Task Force 141 take place a few days earlier, following the events of Modern Warfare 3.

Captain Price hunts Vladimir Makarov after Makarov kills Soap MacTavish. Price eventually tracks him down in New York and kills him with his bare hands, but the confrontation leads him toward something much bigger involving North Korea and a mysterious weapon.

That investigation also leads back to the Archer, a group connected to Mads Mikkelsen's character. Recent Modern Warfare 4 campaign footage suggests Mikkelsen could be playing the person behind the Archer, adding another connection between the campaign and DMZ.

Price believes he needs a weapon of mass destruction to stop what is happening in North Korea.

To get it, he works with Valeria, the former leader of the Las Almas cartel from Modern Warfare 2. Because Valeria has experience smuggling weapons, the two travel to Paris to track down the weapon they need.

Shadow Company is also involved and appears to be trying to stop Price and Valeria. Eventually, Price gets his hands on the weapon and attempts to smuggle it across the world toward North Korea. That forms the basic setup for the Modern Warfare 4 campaign, but the DMZ trailer suggests there is another layer to the conflict.

The trailer explains that after the North Korean invasion, a blast forced people out of the region. North Korea's initial objective was to take control of South Korea, with its new supreme leader and his forces moving into the country and killing anyone standing in their way.

However, the invasion appears to be part of a much larger plan. Ghost explains that after the invasion, the strikes and preemptive attacks pushed people out of the area. Then something even more serious happened: a nuclear meltdown spread radiation throughout the region.

The resulting radiation, combined with dangerous winds, made the tripoint region between Russia, North Korea, and South Korea uninhabitable. That explains why Hajin has become the dangerous environment seen throughout the DMZ.

The region is called a tripoint because the borders of all three countries meet there. The areas around those borders form the various zones players will explore in Hajin.

The game alsohttps://www.noobfeed.com/reviews/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-3-2023-playstation-5-review features an interesting change in who provides radio information. Throughout the previous Modern Warfare games, Kate Laswell has often been the familiar voice guiding the characters through missions. In the DMZ trailer, however, that voice is absent.

That could be a simple change for the new mode, but it also raises some theories about what might happen during the campaign. One possibility comes from the meaning behind the Modern Warfare 4 logo. The Korean number four used in the game's branding is also associated with death in Korean culture, and combined with everything shown in the DMZ trailer, that has led to speculation that the campaign could leave several major characters dead.

Price's situation is already complicated. After going rogue, killing General Shepard, going after Makarov, and taking a weapon of mass destruction, Price becomes a wanted man. Task Force 141 is then tasked with hunting him down.

Recent campaign footage shows Gaz and Ghost pursuing Price because he's trying to contact the Archer while carrying the weapon. However, neither Price nor Gaz appears in the DMZ trailer.

Ghost, meanwhile, seems to be the main character of DMZ.

That matters because another short clip shows Ghost being captured while wearing clothing similar to what he wore in the comics that originally explored his backstory. If Modern Warfare 4 is once again moving toward Ghost's origin story, his larger role in DMZ could be intentional.

It also creates the possibility that Price and Gaz don't survive the campaign. The Archer's fate could be just as important. The opening line from Mads Mikkelsen's character has a noticeable reverb effect that sets it apart from the rest of the trailer's dialogue. Rather than sounding like something happening in the present, it sounds more like a memory.

If that interpretation is correct, Mads Mikkelsen's Archer could already be dead by the time DMZ begins.

That would potentially leave Gaz, Captain Price, and the Archer dead at the end of the Modern Warfare 4 campaign. A more speculative possibility involves Kate Laswell. Since she is no longer the voice on the radio in DMZ, she could also have been killed during the campaign, although there is far less evidence supporting that idea.

The trailer then moves forward to explain what players will actually be doing in DMZ. North Korea is moving back into Hajin after crucial intelligence is recovered about its operations. Much of this information has been kept hidden from the public, including the fact that a series of military facilities sits underneath Hajin.

Those facilities contain chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons.

The North Korean forces are apparently searching for those weapons, and that gives the PvE side of the DMZ its purpose. The enemy soldiers occupying the area are there because North Korea wants to recover the weapons and technology hidden beneath Hajin.

There are also American missiles among the weapons, along with other weapons of mass destruction and nuclear technology. Exactly how those American weapons ended up underground in Hajin remains part of the mystery, but they are clearly important to the conflict.

North Korea isn't the only group moving into the region, though. The trailer also introduces rogue operators who are active throughout the DMZ. Some are there for money, while others have their own reasons for entering the area and stealing the weapons.

Those rogue operators represent the PvP side of DMZ.

In other words, they are the other human players you'll encounter while moving through Hajin. North Korean forces provide the PvE threat, while other players create unpredictable PvP encounters central to the extraction shooter format.

The trailer also appears to tease where DMZ could go after its initial launch. The narration states that the situation is bigger than Hajin and that if the weapons fall into the wrong hands, the threat won't end there.

That could point to future maps and new regions being added to DMZ. If North Korea manages to obtain the weapons, it could potentially use them elsewhere, giving the developers a reason to expand the mode beyond Hajin and introduce new locations over time.

For the initial operation, however, your objectives are fairly clear. You are being sent into Hajin to eliminate enemy combatants, gather intelligence about their operations, and secure the weapons before North Korea can get to them.

The operation is also completely off the books. No official support is waiting for you, so you have to find whatever resources you need within the area itself. Interestingly, the mission isn't necessarily about taking the weapons for yourself. The objective is primarily to prevent North Korea from getting them. That shifts the operation from recovering valuable items to hunting down the people trying to obtain them.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Task Force 141

That is ultimately where the DMZ trailer leaves the story. Ghost makes it clear that the operators aren't simply entering Hajin to retrieve weapons. They're there to hunt the people searching for them. Taken together, the trailer paints a very different picture of the world that exists after the Modern Warfare 4 campaign. Task Force 141 appears to have fallen apart, Kate Laswell is no longer directing operations, Captain Price is seemingly gone, and Gaz is also absent.

Ghost is left behind as the central figure.

His role makes sense within the larger story, especially if the campaign ends with the rest of Task Force 141 either dead, missing, or operating separately. By the time DMZ begins, Ghost appears to be entering Hajin to eliminate the remaining enemy forces and uncover what North Korea plans to do with the weapons hidden beneath the region.

Plenty of details are still missing, particularly about the individual missions, how the extraction system will work, and exactly how the campaign leads into DMZ. More information is expected to arrive as the launch approaches.

For now, though, the DMZ worldbuilder trailer makes one thing clear: the events of Modern Warfare 4's campaign aren't simply setting up another multiplayer mode. They appear to directly shape the world that you'll enter in DMZ, with Hajin serving as the aftermath of the North Korean invasion, the nuclear meltdown, and whatever happens to Task Force 141 along the way.

And if the trailer's clues are accurate, the biggest story surrounding DMZ may not even be the weapons hidden beneath Hajin. It could be finding out exactly what happened to Price, Gaz, Laswell, and the Archer before Ghost is left to finish the job. For now, Ghost has one thing left to say: "We have work to do."
