Nintendo Switch Online Will Erase All Cloud Data if Subscription is Cancelled
Nintendo Switch Online won't retain save files if you cancel your subscription

One of the most appealing additions for Nintendo's Nintendo Switch Online isn't the online multiplayer, although it's definitely a positive, it's the cloud storage. The Nintendo Switch does not have enough room to keep player's storage and updates on one card and with the Nintendo Switch Online service gamers can upload their data for safekeeping, unfortunately, you must maintain an active membership to keep all the data safe.
According to the Nintendo Switch Online FAQ:
We are unable to guarantee that cloud save data will be retained after an extended period of time from when your membership is ended. However, you can continue to use the save data that is saved to your system memory.
As you might expect, gamers are not happy with this. With many arguing that Nintendo is holding the save data hostage to keep players paying for the service.
In comparison, other services like PlayStation Plus will keep your data safe and restore online storage when your subscription is renewed and Microsoft offers cloud saves for free. Both systems also offer external hard drive support, something Nintendo Switch does not.
