Ocarina of Time Remake for Switch 2 Gains Momentum as Insider Reports and Developer Hints Align

Why you might still see the legendary Zelda return on Switch 2 sooner than expected.

If you look at gaming right now, especially in 2026, you can tell that people still care deeply about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Even with other franchises like Star Fox in the mix, the scale just isn’t the same. A new Star Fox might move a few million copies, but an Ocarina of Time remake on Switch 2 feels like the kind of release that could hit 10 million sales quickly and keep going strong throughout the console’s lifecycle. One project clearly stands above the other, and that’s why the remake keeps coming up in conversations.

What makes this situation interesting for you is that the idea of an Ocarina of Time remake didn’t suddenly appear out of nowhere. People have been talking about it for quite a while, long before insider Nate brought it back into the spotlight. His track record pushed the discussion into overdrive, and suddenly everyone started paying closer attention to every small detail connected to the possibility.

When you dig into those details, one of the first places to look is Eiji Aonuma himself.

He has a habit of dropping hints about Zelda projects before the company officially reveals them. You’ve seen it happen with titles like Skyward Sword HD and Link’s Awakening. In more recent interviews, he has been focusing on characters like Rauru, pointing out how newer players who joined during Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom might not fully understand that character’s deeper significance. That kind of emphasis stands out when you think about older Zelda stories.

What really catches your attention is how Aonuma handled questions about an Ocarina of Time remake. Instead of shutting it down, he laughed and gave a “no comment,” making sure the moment was clearly noted. At the same time, when he was asked about something like a Zelda dungeon maker, he dismissed it outright. That difference in response feels deliberate and lines up with his history of teasing projects rather than denying them.

There are also hints about timing. Aonuma has suggested that the Zelda team is close to releasing something on Switch 2. When discussing Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, he mentioned wanting to be the first to get a Zelda game out on the new system, but that project ended up being ready sooner.

Since the next mainline open-world Zelda is still years away, it leaves you with the sense that something else is waiting in the wings.

Beyond interviews, there are technical clues too. Patent filings have shown mechanics involving Navi interacting with what looks very similar to imagery from the Forest Temple. If you compare those visuals, it’s not hard to see why people believe they point directly toward Ocarina of Time. It adds to the growing pile of proof.

Next, there are the people who know what's going on and the people who leak information. Some of them have quietly gained credibility by getting important details right in the past. There were early hints about the Switch 2 reveal timing, along with strange but specific posts referencing Donkey Kong Country Returns HD and internal code names tied to the system.

Later on, cryptic mentions of Xenoblade ended up aligning with the release of Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition on the new console. At one point, a simple mention of “a Zelda remake” appeared without explanation, which fits the pattern of how these hints tend to surface.

Other sources have also added to the conversation. Figures like Special Nick have accurately shared information about projects such as a Mario Galaxy 2 HD remaster and details about Metroid Prime 4, including its scale and even retail bundle pricing for Switch 2. According to those same channels, the Ocarina of Time remake is very much real. Even more unpredictable insiders, like Nash Weedle, mentioned the project early on, reinforcing the idea that multiple people are hearing similar things.

This isn’t just limited to smaller voices either.

VGC has reportedly backed up Nate's podcast claims with its own sources, which means that the information has been confirmed behind the scenes. While skepticism is always part of these situations, the number of overlapping claims makes it harder to ignore.

At the same time, there’s movement around Star Fox as well. The character’s recent prominence in the Mario Galaxy movie has sparked speculation that a new game could be on the way. Interestingly, the podcast discussing these rumors was recorded before that reveal started gaining traction, which adds another layer of timing to everything happening.

If you’ve followed Nintendo long enough, none of the uncertainty around release timing feels unusual. Plans shift internally all the time, and projects can move around without warning. A game expected for June could appear later, get replaced by something else, or even show up suddenly in a Nintendo Direct with little to no marketing. It might not always make sense on the surface, but it’s a pattern the company has leaned into before.

When you put all of this together, the picture that forms is fairly consistent.

The Star Fox project seems real, and so does the Ocarina of Time remake. The bigger question isn’t whether they exist, but when they’ll actually be revealed. Everything points toward an announcement window that’s closer than it might seem, even if it requires a bit more patience before Nintendo makes it official.
