The Canadian, independent games studio Freebird Games was founded over six years ago and have created numerous games, gaining a lot of attention over the years. Known best for To the Moon, the founder of Freebird Games, Kan Gao, revealed yesterday the release date and first trailer for the developer's upcoming game, A Bird Story.

A short adventure game, A Bird Story takes place between episode one and two of To the Moon, following a little boy who finds an injured bird. This young child grows up to be the elderly patient in episode two of To the Moon. Lasting around an hour, A Bird Story follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, having a similar, if not nearly identical, art style, soundtrack and gameplay.

It's no shock then that the games are comparable because, as mentioned, they share a character. Furthermore, both soundtracks are composed by Gao and many of the same artists have contributed to both titles. On the developer's website, Gao writes that he wishes to keep To the Moon fans happy,  however, it's not his priority to create A Bird Story as an exact replica.

I know that for some who have played To the Moon, there might be certain expectations as to how the “next game” should be. And to be honest, I don’t really know how it’ll be in that regard –meeting certain quota or matching aspects of another game aren’t really things that I want to make them around.

However related the two, A Bird Story is a tale of its own, and with very little dialogue, it's a simple one. Taking place between the child's memories and dreams, the short is "a blur between reality and imagination," and Gao's intention is to create something meaningful for himself personally and "hopefully, to you too."

We reviewed To the Moon back in 2012 giving it an 85/100. It may not be the game for everyone, but it's one that the story-driven gamer will enjoy. In fact, we called the story within To the Moon extraordinary and one that portrays real life scenarios extremely well. It's worth a play, and will keep you moderately busy before the release of A Bird Story.

As announced by Gao, A Bird Story will release on November 5 for Windows, Mac and Linux. It'll be available through Steam, GOG and other digital distributers.
