XBOX Reconsiders Exclusives as PlayStation Releases Continue to Spark Debate

XBOX leadership says exclusivity is back under review, but the company's biggest lineup in years is already heading to PlayStation.

The conversation around XBOX exclusives is heating up again, and much of that comes down to comments from XBOX leadership and growing discussion within the community about where the platform is heading next.

Since Asha Sharma took over as head of XBOX, there has been growing attention on whether the company will continue to release its games on PlayStation or bring back more exclusives. The discussion picked up after XBOX stated that it wants to reinforce and strengthen its position in PC gaming. While that focuses heavily on the PC side of the business, it also raises bigger questions about console exclusivity and what role it will play moving forward.

XBOX recently said it plans to re-examine its exclusivity strategy and gathered feedback from fans.

One of the most common requests from core XBOX supporters was a return to exclusives. While that might seem strange to some players, since exclusives do not directly benefit everyone, the argument is that exclusives are still important to the platform's long-term health.

According to comments Asha Sharma made during a Bloomberg tech panel, XBOX is actively evaluating the issue. Sharma explained that the company needs to be thoughtful about every title and learn from similar situations across the gaming industry. She also acknowledged the challenge facing XBOX today.

XBOX as a publisher wants to reach as many people as possible with its games. Meanwhile, XBOX is increasingly positioning itself as a platform, and platforms traditionally need exclusive content and services to attract players. That balance between wider reach and platform identity appears to be at the center of the current discussion.

The broader concern for many observers is not simply about XBOX exclusives.

It is about competition. The gaming industry has benefited for years from multiple major players pushing one another forward. When one company gains too much of an advantage, consumers often lose leverage.

Many people still remember 2013, when XBOX attempted policies centered around always-online requirements and restrictions on used games. PlayStation capitalized on that situation immediately, helping shift the momentum in its favor. More than a decade later, XBOX is still dealing with the consequences of that era.

Today, the situation is very different. XBOX is arguably in one of its weakest positions in the console market, while PlayStation remains firmly in control. With XBOX bringing more of its first-party games to PlayStation, the concern is that PlayStation faces less pressure from a direct competitor.

That is why some fans believe XBOX needs stronger exclusives. Not necessarily because they want to keep games away from other players, but because they want XBOX to become a stronger alternative in the market.

The timing of this debate is especially interesting because 2026 and early 2027 are shaping up to be one of the strongest periods in XBOX history.

Over the next year, XBOX is expected to release major entries from some of its biggest franchises. A new Forza title is on the way; Gears of War: E-Day brings back Marcus and Dom; Halo is receiving a remake; and Fable is finally returning. These are four of the most recognizable XBOX properties, all of which received major releases within a relatively short period.

The problem, at least from an exclusivity standpoint, is that most of those games are also heading to PlayStation. Halo, Forza, and Fable have already been confirmed for PlayStation. The status of Gears of War: E-Day remains less clear, though many expect further details to emerge around future XBOX events.

For some players, that significantly changes the value of owning an XBOX console. These franchises helped build the XBOX brand. Seeing them launch on PlayStation weakens the idea that you need an XBOX to experience the platform's biggest games. Even if XBOX eventually decides to return to a stronger exclusivity strategy, the company will already have released many of its largest titles across multiple platforms.

That raises concerns about whether future lineups can match the strength of what XBOX is offering during this period.

Beyond Fable, the roadmap becomes less certain. Clockwork Revolution remains one of the notable upcoming projects, and there is continued speculation about a potential Spyro game from Toys for Bob. While those titles may generate excitement, they do not necessarily carry the same weight as Halo, Forza, Gears, or Fable.

That creates another challenge for XBOX. If exclusives are going to make a comeback, what games will actually drive hardware sales? The rumored Helix platform often comes up in that conversation. Reports suggest it could function as a hybrid-style device and potentially launch at a premium price point. If that happens, XBOX may find itself competing not only with PlayStation but also with PC gaming.

PC remains another major factor in the discussion.

XBOX continues releasing its games on Steam, and PC gaming continues to grow. While that strategy expands the audience for XBOX games, some believe it also narrows the reasons for consumers to buy XBOX hardware.

Game Pass remains one of XBOX's biggest strengths, but critics argue that it has not been enough on its own to significantly change the platform's position over the last several years. As a result, many supporters continue pointing to Bethesda as a possible solution.

Future exclusives from Bethesda could give XBOX major advantages. The Elder Scrolls VI, a Fallout 3 remake, Wolfenstein 3, and Marvel's Blade are all projects that could potentially strengthen the XBOX ecosystem if they remain exclusive.

However, Bethesda's output has slowed considerably.

Arkane Lyon announced Marvel's Blade some time ago, but updates have been limited. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle launched as an XBOX console exclusive before eventually arriving on PlayStation. MachineGames' next project remains unknown, and major Bethesda releases often require years of development.

Even with concerns surrounding Starfield and criticism directed at Bethesda in recent years, The Elder Scrolls VI still carries enormous anticipation. Having XBOX get some of the big Bethesda exclusives could help turn the tide in the discussion around the platform.

For now, it seems like Asha Sharma is all about steadying the brand, refining messaging, and communicating a clearer vision for the future of XBOX. Big changes aren't going to happen overnight, and it's going to take time to rebuild the XBOX ecosystem.

The challenge is that ecosystem growth depends on long-term commitment. Releasing games on PlayStation may continue to make sense from a business perspective, but it also raises questions about how XBOX can rebuild a stronger console identity.

That concern becomes even more noticeable when looking at development timelines.

The Coalition has spent years working on Gears of War: E-Day. Playground Games is delivering both Fable and Forza. Once those projects launch, it could be years before those studios release another game.

Even if XBOX decides to push harder on exclusives in the future, many of its biggest teams may not have another major release ready until the early 2030s. Future projects such as Halo, Clockwork Revolution, Marvel's Blade, and potential unannounced games could help fill that gap. But it will be hard to beat the scale of the current line-up.

The idea that competition is good for everyone is at the heart of the debate. PlayStation is doing well and will probably continue to do well no matter what XBOX does. But many players believe the industry works best when multiple platforms are competing aggressively for attention.

A stronger XBOX creates more pressure on PlayStation. More pressure leads to more innovation, more consumer-friendly decisions, and more reasons for both companies to improve their offerings.

Whether XBOX ultimately returns to a stronger exclusivity strategy remains unclear.

What is clear is that the company faces a complicated balancing act. It wants larger audiences for its games, but it also wants to strengthen the XBOX platform itself. The next few years will show whether XBOX can do both while still fighting PlayStation in a more crowded gaming marketplace.
