Gaming Benchmarks at Low Settings at 1080p

When we tested at the 1080p low setting, the RTX 5090 was easier to see the differences in CPU performance. In this case, the games were CPU-bound, which showed us how the two chips handled data in different ways.

The Ryzen 7 7700 got about 631 fps in Counter-Strike 2, while the 9800X3D scored about 770 fps. That is a big difference, yet both frame rates are much higher than what most monitors can see, and both CPUs run games fine.

The 9800X3D had an average FPS that was roughly 14% higher and lows that were about 34% stronger in Marvel Rivals.

In Fortnite, the 9800X3D had almost twice as many 0.1% lows as the Ryzen 7 7700, which was the biggest difference. The Ryzen 7 7700 still gave smooth, consistent gameplay and could easily keep up with high refresh rates, even in games where you had to compete.

For most players, these differences matter only when playing professionally, where every frame counts. Both CPUs work great for everyday gaming, but the Ryzen 7 7700 is a much better value overall.

Undervolting and Fine-Tuning Performance

AMD's Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) makes it easy for people who want to get more performance out of their Ryzen 7 7700. Setting a negative curve offset of about -20 steps usually makes things work better without using more power or making things hotter.

This change slightly raised the average FPS during testing while keeping the 0.1% lows the same and keeping power use under control.
