Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has finally received its long-awaited New Game Plus update, giving you another reason to return to Edward Kenway’s adventure across the Caribbean. This update adds several new features, including more rewards, tougher enemies, the return of takedown animations, and Nightmare Mode for those seeking a greater challenge.

You can start another playthrough with many of the upgrades, weapons, and collectibles from your previous journey. But the developers have also added new challenges that make subsequent playthroughs more difficult, giving experienced players more incentive to revisit the game.

With the New Game Plus update, you can continue Edward’s journey without losing all the things you collected in your first playthrough.

You can retain Edward’s tools, upgrades, unlocked weapons, and trinkets, along with the Jackdaw’s upgrades, unlocked officer abilities, and pets. Your customizable outfits and their available options will also carry over, as will your hideout progression, perks, and art collection. Additionally, all ships collected through Kenway’s Fleet will remain available, allowing you to preserve much of your previous progress as you return to the Caribbean.

However, some parts of your last run won’t carry over completely. When you start New Game Plus, they will not physically be on your ship, so they will need to be recruited again. This is a good call as several officers are connected to quests that you’ll need to complete throughout the story.

Your money, materials, and trade goods will be in your inventory, but any quest-related items will be removed. You will also retain your Codex items, including acquired and completed treasure maps, as well as items purchased from the in-game store. This means players can continue using their accumulated resources and previously unlocked content in New Game Plus without having to reacquire everything from scratch.

Your exploration progress will also undergo a reset when you begin another run. Although your Kenway’s Fleet ships remain available, you will need to capture forts again because the map’s fog of war will return. This gives you another reason to revisit locations and reclaim territory throughout the Caribbean.

The update also introduces a new currency exclusive to New Game. Plus, you can earn them by completing challenges and looting chests that you have already opened during earlier playthroughs. You can trade reales for escudos at the general store, then spend your new currency on exclusive outfits and items.

Each time you start a new game Plus, the difficulty increases, making the Caribbean a more dangerous place as you advance in the game.

Elite soldiers will appear more often, and max-level ships will start to patrol the seas, making exploration and naval combat more difficult. You can play up to five New Game Plus cycles, so dedicated players will find a challenge beyond their first playthrough. Items that were previously available for reales will remain unchanged.

For a more punishing experience, Nightmare Mode makes changes that will make combat, stealth, and exploration much more dangerous. Ground-combat enemies deal 1.88x the damage they would normally deal, and the window for parrying attacks is shortened. The white flash that usually tells you that an enemy is attacking has been removed as well, and ranged enemies shoot more often. These changes force you to pay more attention in encounters, rather than relying on the combat cues you know. Enemies move faster, too, and punish hesitation, making every battle more taxing.

One of the most significant changes is the removal of the one-shot kill safety. You can no longer rely on the game to prevent an instant death simply because you still have plenty of health remaining. Bullets and explosives therefore become much more dangerous, requiring you to consider your positioning before entering combat.

Stealth detection time has also been reduced, while enemy investigation time has been extended. Edward must now remain at least six meters above an enemy to stay hidden in a high position, compared with the usual four meters, and enemies can hear him when he moves faster than a walk.

Naval combat and underwater activities are also more dangerous in Nightmare Mode.

All ship damage increases, making encounters at sea more punishing than in the standard experience. Sharks deal more damage, jellyfish damage is doubled, and the oxygen meter depletes faster during underwater activities. Also, wildlife you encounter while harpooning does more damage, so you need to be more careful when hunting.

The update also adds hidden community chests with extra rewards, including things players have asked for. But the developers have made these finds harder to find, and you won’t get straightforward hints to find them. Another welcome addition is the return of takedown animations from the original game.

These include hidden-blade, unarmed, single-sword, and gunblade takedowns so you can have more familiar animations during combat. You can also unlock new cosmetic items, including outfits, pet skins, and trinkets, by progressing through New Game Plus. These additions give you more ways to customize your character and make subsequent playthroughs feel more rewarding.

Alongside these additions, the update includes bug fixes, visual and graphical improvements, and gameplay adjustments.

The developers have described this release as the final major update for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, although smaller patches could still arrive to address significant problems or make further adjustments. The announcement marks an important point in the game’s post-launch support, especially for players hoping to receive additional content.

A potential Nintendo Switch 2 release is another development worth watching, although the information surrounding this update does not confirm a release date or specific plans. The New Game Plus update nevertheless gives returning players a substantial reason to revisit the game, particularly if they are keen to explore the new difficulty options and collect exclusive rewards.

With tougher enemies, additional cosmetics, retained upgrades, and multiple New Game Plus cycles, the update expands the ways you can experience Edward Kenway’s journey. For now, the latest update is available, bringing the current major content additions for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag resynced together in one release.
