ANNO: Mutationem Guide | Best Weapon Style

A guide on best weapon style in ANNO: Mutationem.

Game Guide by Rubaiyat Shihab on  Dec 15, 2025

While playing ANNO: Mutationem, you find many different kinds of weapons. The style of weapon you choose changes how you fight. You can't easily update everything because Grombits are limited. This means you need to know which guns are worth your money and how to use each one in different types of fights.

This guide breaks down every weapon style, explains how you should use them, and helps you decide where to spend your resources. The weapons are presented from least practical to most effective overall. Even so, every weapon remains usable, and your personal playstyle should always guide your final choice.

Rocket Launcher

The Rocket Launcher is a long-range weapon that shoots a lot of rockets at several targets at once. It's stronger than your pistol and can clear multiple enemies at once. But the lock-on process makes you stop, which makes you vulnerable. You also can't choose which enemies it aims at, so you might waste shots. Due to these issues, it feels more like a situation than a necessary thing, and it is not worth spending a lot of money on except in certain cases.

How You Should Use It

You should rely on the Rocket Launcher mainly when facing groups of flying enemies. It performs better in the air than against grounded foes, where other weapons handle crowd control more reliably. If you plan to use it at all, the Fast Locking skill is necessary, as it reduces the time you spend standing still during lock-on.

Bladestaff

The Bladestaff is not a standalone weapon but an alternate form of the Twin Blades. Despite sharing an upgrade path, it features a completely different moveset. It functions as a middle ground between speed and reach, similar to the Light Sword, but requires more careful timing. Some attacks lock you into long animations, making positioning more important than with faster weapons.

Switching between the Twin Blades and the Bladestaff adds flexibility in theory, but in practice it feels impractical. The input relies on the analog stick, and the transformation animation cannot be skipped. This makes mid-combat switching unreliable.

How You Should Use It

You need to manage your combos carefully, especially since the third hit in the standard chain forces a long animation. The Naraka skill, which works like Shadowstep, improves mobility but sits at the end of the upgrade tree, requiring heavy Grombit investment.

The Air Blade attack can deal damage when you have an opening, but it often commits you for longer than the payoff justifies. The Wind Blade charge attack reaches far but leaves a gap in front of you and locks you into an extended animation. While the Bladestaff can work, its cost and limitations make other weapons more practical for most situations.

Particle Cannon

The Particle Cannon is a high-damage ranged weapon that hits every grounded enemy on the screen when fully charged. Its damage output is significant, but its slow charge and recovery times work against the fast-paced nature of combat. Even with upgrades, it remains difficult to use safely.

How You Should Use It

You should reserve the Particle Cannon for moments when enemies group together and you have enough distance to charge safely. Since you acquire it late in the game, opportunities to use it effectively are limited. The Quick Recharge skill is required if you want to reduce downtime and make the weapon usable at all.

Pistol

You get the pistol as your first weapon that can hit targets at a distance. It stays the most useful weapon for the rest of the game. It has a fast fire rate and reload speed, and it lets you move around while you use it. Even though it does less damage per shot than other long weapons, you can use it in the middle of a fight without changing how you play because it doesn't take much time to use. Speed is important in ANNO: Mutationem, and the Pistol is the best long weapon for keeping up with that speed.

How You Should Use It

You will mostly rely on the Pistol against flying enemies or targets positioned out of melee range. It also works well for applying steady damage while repositioning. You should invest early in Auto-Loading to reduce reload time and Max Magazine to increase ammo capacity. Both upgrades are affordable and provide consistent value.

Greatsword

The Greatsword is slow and forces strong commitment with every swing. In a game where animation lock can be punishing, this limits how often you can use it safely. That said, you always have access to it, which means you can bring it out when the situation calls for heavy impact rather than speed.

How You Should Use It

You should use the Greatsword mainly to break boss shields and control crowds of slower enemies. Single slashes are the safest option, allowing you to roll away after attacking. It is also the most reliable melee weapon for hitting airborne enemies.

You do not need to invest Grombits into its skill tree. The base kit already does what it needs to do, and advanced charge upgrades keep you locked in animations longer than is usually safe.

Light Sword

You start with the Light Sword as your tool, and it stays useful throughout the game. It finds a mix between speed and damage without requiring too much dedication. Shadowstep, a movement-based attack that lets you go through enemies and hurt them, is what this character is known for. Just having this skill changes the way you fight.

How You Should Use It

You should treat the Light Sword as your primary damage tool. Its combo chain allows you to attack without worrying about long animation locks, giving you frequent opportunities to reposition. Instead of relying on rolls, you should use Shadowstep to move through enemies and attack from behind, especially when anticipating strong enemy attacks.

When upgrading, your first priority should be unlocking Shadowstep. Beyond that, upgrades mainly add variety rather than necessity, as enhanced charge attacks offer limited practical value.

Twin Blades

The Twin Blades favor speed over raw damage. Their fast movements allow you to react quickly and dodge incoming attacks without getting stuck mid-combo. Each hit does less damage, but the total damage stays the same because of how fast the attack is.

How You Should Use Them

When using the Twin Blades, you can maintain constant pressure while staying mobile. You will usually have time to dodge before an enemy attack connects. The main limitation is the lack of a Shadowstep-style ability, and Cross Slash does not effectively fill that role.

One advantage is efficiency. You do not need to spend any Grombits to make the Twin Blades effective, making them a strong option if you want to conserve upgrade resources.
