MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi Review: A Powerful PCIe 5.0 Motherboard at a Budget Price

It's an exciting time to be a motherboard reviewer because there are so many products on the market that use the B850 chipset and offer great value. MSI has taken this opportunity to showcase its PCIe 5.0 integration skills by offering these boards with high-end features at a much lower price.
The MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi is a great example of a motherboard that combines great performance, durability, and low cost with great skill.

Build and PCB Design
The MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi features a robust 8-layer PCB, reinforced by two additional copper plates that prevent short circuits. This design keeps the environment stable and insulated, and it also helps keep things cooler under load. The build quality feels high-end, giving it a strong foundation for long-term reliability and consistent performance.
Design and RGB Aesthetics
The Tomahawk B850 Max WiFi's design aligns with MSI's military-inspired style. Neon green accents add to the dark, angular theme. This is a bold design choice that won't appeal to everyone, but it works well to keep the Tomahawk identity.
RGB lighting is kept to a minimum, which gives the board an industrial look. However, it still has three RGB headers for people who want to customize their setup.
Compatibility of the CPU and chipset
The B850 chipset gives up some PCIe 3.0 and 4.0 lanes, but it still has full access to the CPU's 24 PCIe 5.0 lanes. The main downside is that the USB bandwidth is lower, there are fewer USB ports, and there is no USB 4.0 support. This compromise, on the other hand, lets the board offer the main benefits of gaming in 2025 at a lower price.
The AM5 socket remains impressive because it supports three generations of Ryzen processors, keeping the platform up to date. It adds real value to a cheap motherboard because it should work with other parts for at least two more years.
VRM Performance and Power Delivery
There are 17 80A power stages in the VRM setup, arranged in a 14+2+1 pattern. This gives it about 1,350A of power delivery. This is the same VRM solution as the more expensive MAG X870 Tomahawk, and it works very well for the price.
High-end motherboards can handle up to 3,000A, but the B850 Tomahawk's 1,350A is more than enough for even the most powerful Ryzen 9000 CPUs, even when overclocked. A double contact layout, dual heatsinks, and extended surface areas make up a well-designed passive cooling system that keeps things cool.
There is some heat difference between blocks because there is no copper heat pipe. Still, temperatures remain below 50°C even after long stress tests, demonstrating how well the design works.
Memory Support
In dual-channel mode, the motherboard supports up to 256GB of DDR5 RAM at speeds up to 8,400 MT/s. This is a big plus over other boards, like ASUS's B850 series, which only supports 192GB of memory. With more RAM and faster transfer rates, the Tomahawk is great for people who do memory-intensive tasks like video editing, 3D rendering, and others.
Storage Configuration
The MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi has a lot of storage. It has four M.2 NVMe slots, two of which support PCIe 5.0 and each can reach up to 128GB/s. Because neither slot supports PCI bifurcation, users can create a RAID setup that reaches up to 256GB/s. This is an amazing feat for a B-series board.
The other two M.2 slots support PCIe 4.0, with one supporting 64Gbit/s and the other 32Gbit/s. All slots feature thick, effective heatsinks to prevent the system from overheating during long gaming or production sessions.
The new screwless M.2 locking mechanism is a big improvement over MSI's old designs. It makes the experience more stable and easier to use.
PCIe Expansion Options
There are three PCIe x16 slots on the board. The main slot supports PCIe 5.0 and features metal shielding to keep the GPU stable and running for a long time. MSI's smart visual GPU lock indicator makes it easy to check that your GPU is securely seated.
The third slot, on the other hand, has limited bandwidth and no locking mechanism, so it isn't very useful in most setups. MSI has done a good job of optimizing bandwidth allocation, so key PCIe 5.0 lanes stay clear even when other devices are connected.
Back I/O and Connections
The back I/O is well-stocked, but it's a little less than what you get with X870 boards. It has about 55 GB/s of total bandwidth spread across several USB ports, three of which are Type-C. Bluetooth 5.4 and WiFi 7 dual-band support give you the best wireless performance. A 5G Ethernet port lets you connect quickly via a wired connection.
The high-end Realtek ALC4080 codec handles the audio, and the 2oz copper layers and 320µF filtering capacitors make the signal clearer. This setup gives you one of the best onboard audio experiences in this price range. Extra USB ports on the front panel add 30GB/s of total bandwidth for peripherals.
Cooling Features
There are eight PWM fan headers for cooling, one of which is for an AIO pump. This makes it easy to control airflow and offers many options for both air- and liquid-cooling setups. A unified connector for AIO systems makes it easier to manage and install cables. This is a nice touch for builders who want a clean setup.
Troubleshooting Tools
The basic troubleshooting tools work well. There is an EZ Debug LED and a Clear CMOS button on the back I/O of the board. These features address the most important diagnostic needs. There are still no advanced tools like power buttons or status displays on the device, which is normal for this price range.

Final Thoughts
The MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi is one of the first PCIe 5.0 motherboards that is both cheap and high-quality. It costs $230 before taxes. MSI's 1,350A VRM, non-bifurcated PCIe 5.0 storage, and 8-layer PCB are all strong and long-lasting, and they all cost less than $250.
The USB limits are clear, but the overall design strikes a good balance between cost and function. If you want a motherboard that works well, lasts a long time, and offers features that will be useful in the future without costing a lot of money, the MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi is a great choice. It's a great lesson in how to make things that work well, are strong, and last a long time.
