Upcoming PlayStation 5 update introduces system enhancements alongside new PSSR2 and FSR4 upscaling technologies

Next big update for the PlayStation 5, as well as new features like PSSR 2 and FSR 4, as well as upgrades to classic games, are still getting people excited. Several things are happening in early 2026, and people are still talking about problems with streaming PS3 games.
Players and fans are also interested in updates to older games, especially those that enable them to run at 60 fps.

Have You Streamed PS3 Games on PS5?
Before we dive deeper into the PlayStation 3 situation on PS5, we want to ask you something. Have you ever streamed PS3 games on your PlayStation 5? We're going to be talking about this situation a bit today.
Next Major PlayStation 5 Update and PSSR2/FSR4
It's that time of the year when we begin discussing the next major update for the PlayStation 5, update 13.0. In recent memory, these updates have been less major in terms of features. That's probably because most of the OS engineers have likely moved on to the PlayStation 6 OS, which has been in the works for some time now.
When it comes to the launch of this next update, we can look at previous years. We should expect an announcement and beta launch sometime in February. These two events could happen on the same day or separately.
The timing ranges from early to late February, so expect it sometime during that month. As for the public launch, it should drop a month or so after the beta begins, putting it sometime in March, depending on when the beta rolls out.
PSSR 2 and FSR 4 are also key elements tied to this period. FSR4 is expected to come to the PlayStation 5 Pro, and PSSR2 is meant to bring FSR4-level quality to the PS5 Pro as well. While they result from collaboration, PSSR2 is Sony's own tech, and AMD's contribution is there too.
We're curious to see the differences between these two when a game supports both FSR4 and PSSR2. We've heard rumors that both are expected to arrive on the PS5 Pro in Q1 2026, meaning sometime between January and March 2026. That aligns with the timing of the next major PlayStation 5 update.
We've said before that FSR 4 and PSSR 2.0 are developer tools. Developers need to implement these technologies into their engines and update their games themselves. At the same time, we're not ruling out the possibility that Sony may need to make some under-the-hood updates to the PS5 Pro to prepare it for PSSR 2.
Maybe it's interesting that all of these developments line up in early 2026, but it could simply be a coincidence. We'll see how it plays out.
We hope this new "major" update 13.0 brings genuinely exciting features to the PS5. It's well past time for something like folders in the main UI, rather than only in the library section. In the following few weeks, we'll learn out what's coming when the beta is announced.
PS3 Games on PlayStation 5: Streaming Issues
Now let's talk about PS3 games that can be played on the PS5. This is a unique situation. If you try to stream a PS3 game from the PlayStation Store's PlayStation Plus Premium section, it won't work. You can click the button, but nothing happens.
The only method that works is streaming from your personal library, and the PS3 game must already be in it. If it isn't, people have found workarounds—but the issue remains that users must even resort to workarounds.
Sony hasn't commented on this issue, and the problem persists. We've experienced this issue as well and aren't sure exactly what's bugged on Sony's end. Hopefully, it gets resolved soon. Let us know if you've run into this problem.

Classic Games on PlayStation 5 Getting 60fps Updates
Moving on to the last issue, old PlayStation 5 games are getting updates that enable them to run at 60 fps. Pushware says that Ubisoft deserves credit for always supporting older games.
While we still hope for updates to fan favorites like Bloodborne, Ubisoft has announced plans to upgrade Far Cry 3 Classic Edition to 60fps on the PS5.
In a teaser post, the company suggested that Far Cry 3 Classic Edition, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon Classic, and Far Cry Primal will all receive 60fps updates via backward compatibility. With Far Cry 3 Classic Edition already confirmed and set for a free upgrade on January 21, it seems likely the others will follow soon.
When it first came out, Far Cry 3 was a great game, and for many people, it is still the best in the series. Many people got hooked on the franchise because of this game. Some liked Far Cry 2, but many of us really liked Far Cry 3.
Later submissions didn't have the same magic. Far Cry 4 didn't quite reach the same heights and couldn't keep us hooked enough to finish it. Far Cry 5 wasn't played by everyone. Far Cry 6 had some enjoyable moments, but again, not everyone has completed it. Yet Far Cry 3 was the one that delivered a complete experience—great story, memorable villain, and strong gameplay.
It also represented the early era of Ubisoft's open-world formula, which they continued to expand—and repeat—in many games afterward. We'd assume the other 60fps updates aren't far behind. Let us know if you've ever played Far Cry 3.
After Show: It's Show Week
Welcome to the After Show, where we like to have a little fun. For today's activity, we want you to body, obliterate, destroy, and overall harass the comment section with "It is show week." This references the Xbox showcase scheduled for later this week.
We're excited for it, and many PlayStation fans likely are as well—especially now that Xbox is functioning more like a third-party publisher.
It's another major event like EA's or Ubisoft's. That's essentially the current landscape. People are looking forward to updates on Forza Horizon 6 and when it might come to PS5, as well as new gameplay from Fable and potential release information—especially with GTA6 launching this year. Microsoft planning to release an unusually large number of games.
