PSSR 2: PlayStation Super Resolution 2 Brings Massive Upgrade to PS5 Pro
PSSR 2 uses a fully updated algorithm and new API, improving image quality while reducing memory and GPU load.

PlayStation's unique upscaling technology is going to get a big update. Better communication between engineers, updated documentation, and better debugging tools all point to big improvements in performance, clearer images, and fewer artifacts.
From what we know so far, PSSR 2 appears to be one of the biggest changes to the platform's rendering process since PSSR was added to the PS5 Pro.

Sony's New Debugging Tools Strengthen PSSR Support
Our team just learned that Sony has released an app called PSML Replay to fix bugs caused by PSSR. Sony is well aware of the artifacting problems seen in several big games, such as Silent Hill F, and is working to fix them.
Developers pointed out that Sony now has more tools for supporting PSSR than AMD does for FSR 3 or FSR 4.
That means fewer bugs, more consistent upscaling, and faster gains across all patched games for you. With the new tools they have, Sony hopes to significantly reduce PSSR problems starting next year.
MFSR2: The Internal Name Behind PSSR2
We also saw references to MFSR2, which stands for "multi-frame super resolution 2." This was written in updated internal documents. People who work on PSSR use this term for it behind the scenes.
In a way similar to how AMD shifted from talking about packed cores to Zen 6C, Sony uses MFSR internally even when discussing PSSR features.
The fact that MFSR2 is showing up in new papers strongly backs up earlier leaks—PSSR2 isn't a small update. It is a major update of the PSSR system's core parts.
A Completely Updated Algorithm and New API
Developers who have direct access to these papers say that MFSR2/PSSR2 uses a completely new algorithm that:
- Lessens the need for some input info
- Lowers the general memory usage
- Cuts down on GPU working times
- Enhances picture quality in all modes
- brings out a whole new API instead of just small changes
If quality moves from PSSR1 to PSSR2, it will likely be like how quality moved from FSR3 to FSR4—a big step forward over a generation, rather than a quick fix.
Since the API is still new, though, game makers have to carefully patch their games to work with PSSR2. It won't just be a switch or an automatic system-level update.
In the settings, you might or might not find a trial "force PSSR2" mode, but even that is still unknown based on what the developers shared.

PSSR Continues Separately from FSR4
One more important thing that the documentation says is that FSR3 and FSR4 are still mentioned separately from PSSR. Sony has no plans to switch from PSSR to AMD's FSR.
Instead, the company will keep working on PSSR2, PSSR3, and beyond, which will be its own way to upscaling that is designed to work best with PlayStation hardware.
AMD will make the PS5 Pro work with FSR4 next year, which is great news. But Sony wants PSSR2 to be as good as or even better than FSR4. The goal is clear: PlayStation doesn't want to follow AMD's upscaling plan, and it wants a technology stack that works with its own ecosystem.
What Players Can Expect When PSSR2 Launches
When PSSR2 comes out early next year, all games that get the right fixes will be noticeably better. New titles should see the following because it's a full remake with a new API:
- Better picture quality
- Less shimmering and artifacting
- More stable movement
- Use less memory.
- Processing on the GPU is faster.
Sony is directly responding to public complaints, negative reviews, and well-known video breakdowns that show PSSR isn't always reliable. The business is taking the problem very seriously and giving workers more tools to fix it.
Now that PSSR2 is ready to go up against FSR4 and DLSS4-class methods, the future of PlayStation's upscaling looks a lot brighter than it did a year ago.
