Sony’s partnership with Hideo Kojima seems to have changed direction. Physint, Kojima Productions' next action-espionage game, was once expected to be a major PlayStation release. Now, reports say Sony has left the project, and Xbox may step in instead.
Recent reports say Sony told Kojima Productions in mid-June that it would stop supporting Physint. This decision ended Sony’s role in the project, even though the game was seen as Kojima’s return to the action-espionage genre that made him famous.

Things got more interesting when Microsoft quickly responded.
Xbox steps in. Instead of letting Physint stall, Xbox reportedly grew its partnership with Kojima Productions. Microsoft is now expected to handle publishing and funding, and the partnership could also lead to working together in film and television.
For Xbox, working more closely with Kojima Productions is a big step. Kojima is one of the most well-known creators in gaming, and having his next major project linked to Xbox could give Microsoft another strong partnership. Why did Sony step away?
The reported reason appears to come down to cost and risk. The production budget is reportedly between $300 million and $400 million, with release not expected until around 2030. That combination creates a huge financial commitment for a project that could take years before generating a return.
Sony has become more careful with expensive projects after issues with some of its live-service games. As a result, spending hundreds of millions on a long-term single-player game may have been hard to justify. In the end, it came down to the numbers.
Sony may have felt the potential return didn't justify the big investment and long wait.
More than losing a game. However, Sony walking away from Kojima has consequences beyond Physint itself. Kojima has built a strong reputation as an independent creative force, and Sony once saw its partnership with him as a key part of PlayStation’s lineup.

Losing that connection could feel like more than just dropping a costly project—it could be a major win. Microsoft has increasingly focused on partnerships and bringing recognizable creators and franchises into its ecosystem. A deeper relationship with Kojima Productions fits that strategy particularly well.
Of course, we may not know the full story until Project Phoenix is finally released. The budget, timeline, and Xbox’s role still need official confirmation. This represents a major shift. A project that once looked like another PlayStation-Kojima collaboration could potentially become an Xbox-backed title instead.
If the reports prove accurate, Sony may have decided to cut its losses—but Xbox could be the company that benefits most from that decision.
