NVIDIA DLSS Frame Gen Mod Enables Support on Older GPUs

Community mods unlock official NVIDIA DLSS frame generation on RTX 30 and RTX 20 series graphics cards.

DLSS Frame Generation has remained exclusive to newer NVIDIA graphics cards, leaving RTX 30 and RTX 20 series owners without official access. However, recent community mods have raised questions about this limitation by enabling DLSS Frame Generation on unsupported GPUs.

Testing has now revealed that these older graphics cards can run the actual DLSS Frame Generation model, including Multi Frame Generation, without requiring the hardware features NVIDIA previously claimed were necessary. NVIDIA currently offers two tiers of official DLSS Frame Generation support. RTX 40 series, built using the Ada Lovelace architecture, supports the standard version of DLSS Frame Generation.

NVIDIA's DLSS Frame Generation Support and Its Hardware Limitations

The RTX 50 series, based on the Blackwell architecture, extends Frame Generation support with Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Frame Generation. Multi Frame Generation generates more than two frames, with up to five generated frames in the 6x mode. Meanwhile, Dynamic Frame Generation adjusts the number of generated frames to match your monitor's refresh rate.

When these features debuted, NVIDIA attempted to use specific hardware features exclusive to newer architectures to explain why they weren't available on older GPUs. At the launch of DLSS Frame Generation in 2022, NVIDIA restricted the feature to the RTX 40 series because the new Ada Lovelace architecture supported hardware-accelerated optical flow.

According to NVIDIA, this hardware feature was essential for generating frames, which meant DLSS Frame Generation couldn't be brought to the RTX 30 or RTX 20 series. However, when NVIDIA upgraded DLSS Frame Generation to version 4 in early 2025, it stopped using optical flow hardware entirely. Instead, the company introduced an AI-based optical flow model that runs on the Tensor Cores.

This approach delivered better image quality and became available on the RTX 40 and RTX 50 series, alongside the new Multi Frame Generation feature. However, this raised an important question. Wasn't hardware-accelerated optical flow the entire reason Frame Generation wasn't available on the RTX 30 series?

NVIDIA Restricted Multi Frame Generation

NVIDIA used a similar hardware-based explanation to justify why Multi Frame Generation only worked on the RTX 50 series. The company pointed to hardware flip metering, a feature available exclusively with the Blackwell architecture. According to NVIDIA, there was no way to generate more than one frame on an older GPU without this hardware feature.

The output wouldn't be smooth enough, resulting in a poor gaming experience. In Multi Frame Generation, NVIDIA hasn't changed how the feature works to remove its hardware flip metering requirement. As far as we know, it was still designed with this feature in mind. However, it was always questionable whether hardware flip metering was necessary for Multi Frame Generation to work.

NVIDIA may also have artificially restricted this feature to the RTX 50 series to make it exclusive to the new generation and boost sales. After all, marketing the RTX 5070 as faster than an RTX 4090 becomes harder if the RTX 4090 also has access to Multi Frame Generation, which NVIDIA used to make that performance claim in the first place.

NVIDIA RTX 5070 Restricted From Multi Frame Generation

The mod we're examining is called Universal MFG Unlocker.

The mod enables several features, including DLSS 5 functionality in unsupported games, XeSS, Multi Frame Generation, and more. However, it mainly lets users run all types of DLSS Frame Generation on RTX 20 and RTX 30 series graphics cards. It also unlocks 3x to 6x Multi Frame Generation on RTX 40 series cards.

Using Universal MFG Unlocker to enable Frame Generation on the RTX 30 series isn't as straightforward as toggling a setting or selecting an option in the NVIDIA app. No application or user interface lets you install the feature. Instead, you have to rename the downloaded DLL to a supported file name and copy it into the game directory of the title you want to unlock.

The file name you use depends on the files the game already uses. Avoid conflicts by choosing a DLL name the game doesn't already use. Once you do, the game should launch MFG Unlocker when you start it. After you copy and rename the files, MFG Unlocker should work as expected.

FAQ

Q. Can DLSS Frame Generation work on RTX 30 series GPUs?

A. Yes. Universal MFG Unlocker enables the actual DLSS Frame Generation model on RTX 30 series graphics cards, including the RTX 3090, despite the lack of official NVIDIA support.

Q. Does Universal MFG Unlocker support RTX 20 series GPUs?

A. Yes. The mod enables DLSS Frame Generation on both RTX 20- and RTX 30-series graphics cards.

Q. Can the RTX 3090 run Multi Frame Generation?

A. Yes. Testing demonstrated that the RTX 3090 can run 4x and 6x Multi Frame Generation through Universal MFG Unlocker with good frame pacing.

Q. Does Universal MFG Unlocker require additional installation steps?

A. Yes. You need to rename the downloaded DLL to a supported file name and copy it into the game's directory. Some games may also require additional settings or mods to enable Frame Generation correctly.
