DLSS Frame Generation Works on RTX 30 Series GPUs Through Mods

Community-developed mods are bringing NVIDIA's latest frame generation technology to older GeForce graphics cards despite official hardware restrictions.

NVIDIA's DLSS frame generation has remained officially restricted to newer GeForce graphics cards, leaving RTX 30 and RTX 20 series owners without access to the technology. But community-made patches bypass these limitations, enabling real DLSS frame generation on older GPUs. We recently tested Universal MFG Unlocker and found that NVIDIA's frame generation technology can run on unsupported architectures while still delivering good visual quality and smooth frame pacing.

NVIDIA's DLSS Frame Generation Restrictions

Currently, NVIDIA officially supports two levels of DLSS frame creation. The Ada Lovelace architecture-based RTX 40 series supports the usual 2x frame generation, which adds an AI-generated frame between traditionally rendered frames.

Latest DLSS Upscaling Technology on NVIDIA Older GPUs through Mod

Blackwell powers the RTX 50 series with Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Frame Generation. Multi Frame Generation can generate up to five additional frames in 6x mode. Dynamic Frame Generation generates as many frames as possible to reach the monitor's maximum refresh rate.

In 2022, NVIDIA released DLSS Frame Generation but limited the feature to RTX 40 series GPUs, since Ada Lovelace had dedicated, hardware-accelerated optical flow. NVIDIA said this gear was required to create the extra frames.

But then, DLSS 4 revised that strategy in early 2025. Instead of discrete optical flow hardware, NVIDIA uses an AI-based optical flow model that runs on Tensor Cores. They removed the original requirement; however, frame generation was still only available on RTX 40 and RTX 50 series GPUs, with no clear technical explanation.

NVIDIA has similarly confined Multi Frame Generation to Blackwell because of its special hardware flip metering capability.

Universal MFG Unlocker Enables Frame Generation on Older GPUs

Recently, community changes have begun to challenge these constraints. A good example is Universal MFG Unlocker, which lets you use several NVIDIA technologies that aren't usually available on unsupported systems.

The hack allows for regular DLSS frame generation on RTX 20 and RTX 30 series GPUs, and 3x to 6x Multi Frame Generation on RTX 40 series graphics cards. To use it, download a DLL, rename it to a supported file name, and copy it into the game's installation directory. The precise file name depends on what files the game already has, and some titles require further settings.

If properly installed, the mod captures frame-creation commands and passes them through NVIDIA's official DLSS Frame Generation model. This brings previously unavailable options into compatible games. Some titles, including Resident Evil Requiem, require additional modifications, while others work immediately.

RTX 3090 Matches RTX 5090's DLSS Frame Generation Quality

The biggest question is whether the modification actually runs genuine DLSS frame generation or simply substitutes another technology. Testing compared an RTX 3090 running DLSS Frame Generation through Universal MFG Unlocker with an RTX 5090 using NVIDIA's official implementation. Both GPUs were tested at 1440p with identical settings and 2x frame generation.

The results showed remarkably similar visual quality. Both graphics cards displayed the same interpolation behavior, motion handling, camera transitions, and visual artifacts. The artifacts even appeared in the same locations. These similarities strongly suggest that Universal MFG Unlocker runs the actual DLSS frame generation model rather than disguising another technology as DLSS.

RTX 3090 Handles Multi Frame Generation Smoothly

Frame pacing is another important consideration. The RTX 3090 generated smooth, steady 2x frames, matching the performance of the RTX 40 and RTX 50 series GPUs. Even more astonishing, the RTX 3090 managed 4x frame generation in Cyberpunk 2077 with constant frame delivery. Even at 6x, Crimson Desert delivered smooth results; however, the base rendering rate fell into the 20fps range.

There were minor swings, but no major frame-pacing concerns or irregular delivery. In testing, the variable refresh rate also behaved as expected.

NVIDIA's DLSS Restrictions Raise Questions

These findings suggest that the limits placed on NVIDIA may be more arbitrary than technical. AMD had to make architectural changes to RDNA 3 to bring FSR 4.1 support for various instructions, while NVIDIA's current frame generation model seems to work on earlier GPUs without significant changes.

Technically, NVIDIA never said that frame generation would be supported on RTX 30 series cards, thus they haven't broken any promises here. However, limiting useful features makes newer generations more attractive.

In the end, the Universal MFG Unlocker proves that real DLSS frame generation is possible on RTX 20 and RTX 30 series GPUs. It would be nice to have official support, especially with rising graphics card prices making upgrades harder.

FAQ

Q. Can DLSS frame generation work on RTX 30 series GPUs?

A. Yes. Universal MFG Unlocker enables genuine DLSS frame generation on RTX 30 series graphics cards, including the RTX 3090, despite NVIDIA's lack of official support.

Q. Does Universal MFG Unlocker support RTX 20 series GPUs?

A. Yes. The modification can also unlock DLSS Frame Generation on RTX 20 series graphics cards, although compatibility may vary by game.

Q. Can RTX 30 series GPUs use Multi Frame Generation?

A. Yes. Universal MFG Unlocker enables Multi Frame Generation on RTX 30 series GPUs, including 4x and 6x modes, with testing demonstrating reasonably smooth frame pacing.

Q. Does DLSS frame generation through Universal MFG Unlocker deliver the same visual quality as official support?

A. Testing with an RTX 3090 and RTX 5090 showed remarkably similar visual quality, interpolation behavior, and frame generation artifacts, suggesting that the mod uses NVIDIA's genuine DLSS frame generation model.
