Desktop replacement laptops occupy a unique position in the PC market. These computers target gamers, video editors, and 3D artists, promising excellent desktop-class performance in a compact form factor. But cramming high-end hardware into a laptop means trade-offs in cooling, power consumption, upgradeability, and performance.

The MSI Raider 16 MAX HX tries to push past these limits with flagship technology, but can it really replace a desktop PC?

Aggressive Design and Practical Features

The Raider comes in two-tone black, with MSI Dragon detailing and LED parts that highlight its gaming personality. The keyboard backlighting and glowing rear logo look nice, though the big RGB strip on the front might not suit everyone.

The physical dimensions make the desktop-replacement concept clear. It's also a bit bulkier than most gaming laptops, at around 3cm thick and 2.6kg. But the hardware inside makes the weight make sense. MSI has also incorporated a handy upgrade portion, held in place by two screws. This panel gives access to the RAM and storage components, so you can expand memory and SSD capacity without taking the laptop apart.

Core Ultra 9 and RTX 5090 Deliver Great Productivity Performance

The setup tested here is the most expensive one, with an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus processor, a GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, 64GB DDR5 memory, and a 2TB SSD. We used PugetBench to test Adobe Premiere Pro performance and assess its creative performance. MSI Raider achieved a great score of 101,443.

For comparison, we also used a desktop rendering system with an Intel Core i9-14900K and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080. Surprisingly, the desktop trailed the MSI laptop by about 10,000 points.

It showcases the Raider's ability for demanding productivity and creative workloads. Another strong point is the built-in 240hz QHD+ OLED display, with great colors, image definition, and overall panel quality for gaming and professional applications.

RTX 5090 laptop gaming performance shows a relatively small gap

Gaming performance shows a more complicated story. We tested the laptop in Cyberpunk 2077 at its native resolution of 2560x1600 using the Ray Tracing Overdrive preset. The desktop scored 77 fps, whereas the MSI Raider managed just about 65 fps, a 16% performance loss.

Black Myth: Wukong made a modest difference, with the desktop producing only 4 fps more than the laptop. That's a performance disparity of around 7%.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales also posted similarly competitive numbers. The laptop averaged about 120 fps, while the desktop averaged between 125 fps and 130 fps. That is a difference of about 4% to 8%, depending on the PC's performance.

The laptop scored between 4% and 16% lower across these games than the desktop. Those are impressive results for anything portable.

Cooling Performance

Another key factor for desktop-replacement laptops is thermal uniformity. To test the cooling system, we ran 15 consecutive Cyberpunk 2077 benchmarks with Ray Tracing Overdrive and frame creation turned off. The results were remarkably consistent. Temperatures rose only a few degrees, and frame rates improved slightly before leveling off.

Another plus was the fan noise. Even under heavy workloads, the cooling system stayed relatively quiet and didn't need to crank fan speeds to peak. You could try bumping up the fan curves for more performance, but it would come at the cost of more noise.

Can the MSI Raider 16 MAX HX Replace a Desktop PC?

The MSI Raider 16 MAX HX is a strong contender as a desktop replacement laptop. Its Premiere Pro performance, competitive gaming scores, and consistent cooling indicate that strong mobile hardware can manage demanding tasks with few major trade-offs.

But it doesn't fully erase the benefits of desktop hardware. Differences in performance, connection, and upgradeability are still factors to consider.

Ultimately, the Raider delivers something that standard PCs cannot: the flexibility to carry a powerful gaming and productivity system in a backpack. It's a really appealing option for gamers and professionals who want high-end performance without being chained to a desk.
