GTA 6 Introduces New PS5 Firmware Requirement as Retailers Prepare for Launch

Rockstar tightens anti-piracy measures ahead of preloads, while new soundtrack discoveries and retail bonuses offer more details about the upcoming release.

With GTA 6 getting closer to its November 19 release date, more details are emerging about how Rockstar Games and its retail partners are preparing for launch. From new PlayStation 5 firmware requirements designed to prevent piracy to potential pre-order bonuses at Walmart, plenty is happening behind the scenes. We also have another interesting discovery involving the game's official soundtrack, along with new information about physical game shipments arriving at retailers ahead of the preload period.

One of the biggest developments concerns the PlayStation 5, as GTA 6 will now require a newer system firmware version to run. Sony has apparently now set firmware version 14.22.00 as the new minimum requirement, replacing the previous 14.10.00 version. The update was released to stop jailbroken consoles from accessing the game and possibly playing it before its official release.

GTA 6 PS5 Firmware Update

Given all the hype surrounding GTA 6, it's no surprise that Rockstar and Sony would take additional steps to protect the game.

With millions of players waiting for its release, neither company wants to risk someone gaining unauthorized access to the files. The new firmware requirement effectively prevents consoles with older, jailbroken software from launching the game.

This becomes even more important as GTA 6 is set to be available for preload on November 12, a full week before its official launch. If someone managed to access the game's files through a jailbroken console during that period, it could potentially result in major leaks before players even get the chance to experience it themselves.

There's also a good chance this won't be the last firmware update Sony introduces before launch. Given the size of GTA 6, the company will probably want to ensure its security measures are properly in place before players start downloading the game. Sony has good reason to be cautious, particularly after what happened with Grand Theft Auto 5.

Hackers broke into the game's files before release and leaked key story details, including how the story would end.

Audio from the game also leaked, including things Rockstar would have liked to keep under wraps until launch. They say that even Sony had to apologize for the whole thing, and it's something that both companies would rather forget.

And if the right security measures aren't taken, the same could happen to GTA 6, which also gets a seven-day preload window. Rockstar clearly wants to avoid another major leak, and Sony appears to be doing its part by introducing additional firmware requirements ahead of the game's arrival.

Meanwhile, another interesting discovery involves the game's soundtrack, specifically a piece of music many players might have heard without realizing its connection to GTA 6. The track featured in the game's South Park dog poop gameplay footage is apparently the same music used during the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller reveal.

This means the music was part of the official GTA 6 score composed by Justice all along.

When Sony first revealed its DualSense controller, the background music sounded like something that could easily belong in Rockstar's upcoming game. However, the connection wasn't immediately obvious, and it took community members to put the two pieces together.

Unfortunately, sharing the actual track isn't particularly straightforward, as Rockstar and YouTube are reportedly still working through the details surrounding copyright protection for the official score. Nevertheless, comparing the two videos makes the connection fairly clear.

Another Justice track could also be revealed before the game's release. According to a post from a user named DB Maine on the Justice Music subreddit, they've been monitoring public music code databases to identify new content associated with the electronic music duo.

By regularly exporting and comparing database information, the user noticed that a new track titled "Escort" had appeared.

The database reportedly lists Gasbard and Xavier as the track's authors, with no mention of any additional featured artists. While there's no confirmed release date, the user believes it could eventually arrive as a standalone single. More importantly, they claim that the track is genuinely part of the GTA 6 score.

Rockstar has already been gradually revealing musical details throughout the game's marketing campaign, so another soundtrack announcement wouldn't be particularly surprising. However, the company could still keep most of the official score under wraps, allowing you to discover the remaining tracks when the game finally launches.

Away from the soundtrack, Sony also appears to be preparing new GTA 6-themed retail displays to promote the PlayStation 5 ahead of release. Images of one such display have surfaced from what appears to be a German video game retailer, judging by the language featured in the promotional material.

The display is essentially a large promotional box featuring the GTA 6 logo, the game's official box art, its November 19 release date, and the PEGI 18 rating. It also includes the "Plays Best on PlayStation 5" message alongside the Rockstar Games logo.

Interestingly, these displays are expected to feature PlayStation 5 consoles, which could be encouraging news if you're still trying to secure a system before launch.

PS5 availability has been relatively limited in several markets, and finding one in stock hasn't been particularly easy. While there's no confirmation that these displays indicate a major restocking effort, they could suggest that retailers are preparing to receive additional consoles as the release date approaches.

Walmart is also preparing something interesting for customers who pre-order GTA 6. According to an internal document distributed to its stores, the retailer is organizing a special promotion called Surprise and Delight, which will apply to qualifying PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S pre-orders.

The instructions say stores should begin distributing the promotional bags on November 12. Employees are expected to prepare the bags in advance, collect qualifying pre-orders through the standard process, and place both the game and the Surprise and Delight package inside a single GMD bag. Each eligible order will receive one promotional bag while supplies last.

What's particularly interesting is that Walmart hasn't revealed exactly what these packages will contain. Some fans believe they could be fairly simple giveaways, potentially including snacks such as Pringles and a bottle of Coke. Walmart previously offered similar goodie packages to customers who pre-ordered the Nintendo Switch 2, so this promotion could follow the same approach.

However, other fans hope Rockstar has something more interesting planned.

Instead of a few snacks and drinks, customers could get exclusive GTA 6 memorabilia. One possibility people have been discussing is a physical map of the game world, although nothing confirms Rockstar is involved in the promotion.

It remains unclear whether other retailers will offer similar deals or whether this is exclusive to Walmart. Either way, the promotion gives physical pre-orders another potential advantage as the launch approaches.

Speaking of physical retailers, Target has also revealed some interesting information about its upcoming GTA 6 inventory. According to internal inventory information, the retailer is expected to receive its physical game boxes on November 10. This means stores should have their inventory in their warehouses shortly before the November 12 preload date.

That timing could also help clarify what's actually included with the physical edition. There's been considerable discussion about whether the boxes will contain a physical map, additional materials, or simply a download code. With shipments expected to arrive soon, we might finally get a better idea of what Rockstar has prepared for physical buyers.

The inventory figures also reveal an interesting difference between the two console versions. At least one Target location is reportedly receiving 60 PlayStation 5 copies compared to just 12 copies for Xbox Series X|S. That's a significant gap, although it could simply reflect the number of pre-orders each platform has received at that particular store. It doesn't necessarily represent the overall demand across every retailer.

Target is expected to have these copies ready for customers by November 12, giving us another potential opportunity to learn more about the physical packaging before launch.

Still, including a physical map could be a questionable decision, especially when players might get their hands on the packaging seven days before the game officially releases. A detailed map could reveal locations and other information that Rockstar would prefer players to discover naturally. At the same time, releasing a physical edition containing nothing but a download code would feel disappointing.

The physical disc debate is becoming more relevant as more information about the game's retail distribution is revealed. Physical copies have traditionally included extra materials and collectibles, which appeal to players who want something tangible. Much of that appeal would be lost if the disc were replaced with a download code in a physical box.

With November 19 approaching, Rockstar's preparations are becoming more apparent. With the final GTA 6 release date still a long way off, there's still a lot we don't know about the game, from Sony's new security requirements and soundtrack reveals to PS5 promotional displays, Walmart's mysterious pre-order packages, and Target's upcoming inventory.
