Early zones in Phantom Blade Zero feature brittle wooden floorboards that you cannot break right away. To smash through them and reach hidden rooms underneath, you need the Bashpole Phantom Edge.

Although the path toward it gets teased early in the story, you cannot actually claim it until much later in your run.

Phantom Blade Zero Unlocking Mandate Encampment

Unlocking Mandate Encampment

When you first arrive at the Village of Lu, Soul points out a road split leading toward the Mandate Encampment. You cannot head there immediately. The gate stays locked until you clear major story milestones across multiple regions.

First, fight your way completely through the Village of Lu. Continue onward into the region of Pangzhen until you encounter and defeat the boss named Gu Wanyue, The Wailing Wraith.

Once Gu Wanyue is defeated, head straight into the Well of Wei Sanchuan. Search the area thoroughly for the key to the Mandate Encampment in Phantom Blade Zero.

Locating the Bashpole

Take the key with you and head to the main entrance gate of the Mandate Encampment and unlock it. Push deeper into the camp until you discover the checkpoint bell labeled Beneath the Watchtower.

Right beside this bell sits a massive iron gate bound shut by heavy chains. Pull out the Cleave Axe to shatter the chains. Step through the opened gateway into the arena, where you will immediately face off against Wan Jun, The Coppermaul.

Defeating Wan Jun

Wan Jun, The Coppermaul looks terrifying due to his massive frame, but he moves very slowly and hits lighter than expected. His weapon swings leave wide recovery openings that make the fight manageable if you keep your composure in Phantom Blade Zero.

Most of his standard weapon swings can be parried or dodged cleanly. Because of his slow movement speed, creating distance lets you read incoming attacks without panic. Watch out specifically for his quick double-strike swing, which comes out faster than the rest of his moveset.

Unlike heavily armored encounters such as Wu Xuan, The Fallen General, you do not need to rely solely on perfect parries to crack his defenses.

Direct offensive pressure breaks his guard cleanly. Wait out his wide swings, step in while he stumbles from the momentum, and punish him until he goes down.

Defeating Wan Jun, The Coppermaul rewards you with the Bashpole Phantom Edge, allowing you to smash through cracked wooden floorboards across past and future zones in Phantom Blade Zero.

FAQ

Q. Can you go to the Mandate Encampment when you first reach the Village of Lu?

A. No. Even though the path diverges early on, the entrance gate is locked. You must finish the Village of Lu, travel through Pangzhen, defeat Gu Wanyue, The Wailing Wraith, and grab the key inside the Well of Wei Sanchuan before you can enter.

Q. Do you need to equip the Bashpole to break wooden floors?

A. No. Traversal functions work automatically in the environment. Whenever you stand over cracked wooden floorboards, the prompt appears, letting you smash downward to drop into the floor below without equipping it manually in combat slots.

Q. Which tool is required to open the gate to Wan Jun, The Coppermaul?

A. You need the Cleave Axe to cut through the massive chains sealing the gate near the Beneath the Watchtower checkpoint bell.
