Apple may be looking to expand its Mac portfolio with a new desktop computer called the Mac Neo. After the success of the MacBook Neo, the company might release a smaller, more affordable Mac Mini for consumers who want an inexpensive way to run macOS. The Mac Neo could be Apple's cheapest desktop Mac ever, possibly with a fanless design, an iPhone-class processor, and a starting price likely below $500.

MacBook Neo's Success Creates Room for Another Affordable Mac

Apple introduced the MacBook Neo in March 2026 as its budget-friendly laptop. At launch, it started at $599, with an education price of $499. It features the A18 Pro chip, the same processor found in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, though it has one fewer GPU core. The starting configuration also includes 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. For an additional $100, you get Touch ID and 512GB of storage.

The MacBook Neo has been a huge hit since its inception and is now one of Apple's best-selling MacBooks. But Apple has now boosted pricing on most of its Mac products. The MacBook Neo is priced at $699 and $599 for education. Some of these changes stem from higher prices for memory and NAND storage, partly due to data-center demand.

The Mac Mini has also become more expensive. Previously, its 256GB storage and 16GB RAM configuration started at $599. Apple has since discontinued that configuration, making the 512GB model the entry-level option at $799. This creates an opportunity for another affordable desktop Mac.

Mac Neo Could Feature a Smaller and Thinner Design

The Mac Neo will likely be a thinner and possibly smaller version of the current Mac Mini. Apple could make it an entry-level device for everyday computing, not a high-performance desktop.

One big difference could be its cooling system. If Apple skips an inbuilt cooling fan, it could enable a smaller casing for the Mac Neo. It might also be more limited in connectivity: maybe a couple of USB ports on the front, plus two USB-C ports, HDMI, Ethernet, and power on the back.

A19 Pro could make the Mac Neo more powerful

Apple might want to use the A18 Pro CPU at first, but an A19 Pro setup appears more likely if the desktop releases in 2027. The upgraded processor could also come with 12GB of RAM, up from the 8GB found in the current MacBook Neo.

This combo should be powerful enough for everyday productivity, web browsing, media consumption, and basic creative work. You could even edit regular photos and videos taken on your phone. But demanding projects using high-resolution 4K120fps RAW footage would probably be above its intended use.

Another drawback is the lack of an inbuilt cooling fan. Like the MacBook Air and MacBook Neo, continuous intense workloads may cause the device to throttle performance to manage heat. The Mac Neo would target home users rather than professionals who need workstation-level performance.

Mac Neo Release Date Could Be Set for 2027

The earliest possible launch window seems to be March or April 2027, with the next-gen MacBook Neo possible. The new laptop is set to get the A19 Pro CPU and 12GB of RAM, with few changes to its overall look. The desktop might also have the same processor and memory setup. We could also see several color variants like a multicolored MacBook Neo.

Mac Neo Could Start at $399

Pricing could become the biggest selling point. With the Mac Mini now starting at $799, Apple has considerable room for a cheaper desktop. The Mac Neo could potentially start between $399 and $499 in the US. The base configuration might include 256GB of storage, while spending another $100 could provide 512GB and additional connectivity.

Education pricing could make it even more tempting, with the base model at $299 and the enhanced configuration at $399. If these speculations are true, the Mac Neo could offer an affordable gateway into Apple's desktop ecosystem for students, families, and everyday users.
