Xbox Ally and Ally X handhelds offer the best of both worlds: the flexibility of a PC and the ease of use of a console.

Designed to combine the flexibility of PC gaming with a console-like experience, the Xbox-branded handheld devices, the Ally and Ally X, offer a unique balance of capabilities, including both opportunities and constraints that influence how gamers can enjoy their games.

From compatibility with PlayStation titles to the restrictions of quick resume, these handhelds bring a lot to the table while still being firmly rooted in PC architecture.

Playing PlayStation Games on Xbox Handhelds

Yes, the Xbox Ally can play PlayStation games. Because the device is a PC handheld at its core, it supports titles from the PlayStation PC platform, which includes iconic games like Spider-Man, God of War, and Ghost of Tsushima.

You can also run anything available on Steam, making it possible to enjoy PlayStation's best releases right on an Xbox-branded system. Interestingly, some crossover titles like Helldivers are also available on Xbox, creating an unusual overlap between the two ecosystems.

Limitations with Nintendo Titles

Nintendo games cannot be played legally on the Ally or Ally X; however, PlayStation games can be played on them. Nintendo still prohibits using ROMs; therefore, the only way to imitate games is to manually remove the ROM from a legitimately bought copy.

The company remains protective of its intellectual property and keeps its titles tied to its own platforms, such as the Switch and its upcoming successor.

Compatibility with All PC Launchers

The handhelds are not locked into a single verified system. You can launch games across Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Xbox Play Anywhere, and more. All titles appear within the unified game library and launch seamlessly from the Xbox full-screen experience.

This design provides a smooth, console-like interface while keeping the full freedom of a Windows-based system.

No Native Xbox Console Game Support

One limitation is that you cannot play Xbox console games natively. Emulation for previous-generation Xbox titles does not exist yet in a functional form. However, workarounds like Xbox Cloud Gaming or remote play from an existing Xbox console are available.

These aren't perfect solutions, but they at least allow access to those games in some form.

Full-Screen Experience and Aggregated Library

The full-screen Xbox experience allows you to launch games from any platform without switching back to the Windows desktop. This feature integrates all launchers into a unified library and keeps your recently played titles in one list.

The result is a cohesive, console-like interface that still gives you the depth of a PC gaming system.

No Quick Resume Functionality

Unlike the Xbox Series X or Series S, the handhelds lack the quick resume feature. A quick resume allows multiple games to stay active in memory, letting you switch between them instantly without restarting.

On the Ally and Ally X, you still need to fully relaunch a game after closing or switching. For players used to the instant immersion of quick resume, this will feel like a step back.

Sleep and Wake Are Not the Same

Another restriction that people often get wrong is the difference between sleep and wake functioning. The Ally and Ally X don't let you pick up where you left off in a game after waking up, unlike the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch. You can use Windows' hibernate mode, although it doesn't always work well.

Some games resume smoothly, while others suffer from frame drops, glitches, or visual artifacts. At times, you may even need to restart the game or the system entirely.

Flexibility to Use Windows 11

If needed, you can exit the full-screen experience and access the full Windows 11 desktop. This enables the installation of mods, customization of software, or the use of the handheld as a traditional PC. Exiting back into full-screen experience requires a reboot, emphasizing that the two environments are distinct rather than one running inside the other.

TV and Monitor Output

The devices support output to larger displays via USB-C or docking stations. For the Ally X variant, automatic super resolution (ASR) can enhance visuals when stretched to 4K panels.

This feature makes the graphics crisper and more consistent when switching from handheld to TV, which is especially useful for docked installations.

Update Limitations

It is not possible to install all updates in full-screen Xbox mode. Hardware-level or system-level updates frequently necessitate reverting to Windows Update or ASUS Armory Crate, even though many software updates operate immediately within the interface.

When these upgrades are required, you'll probably get alerts in the Xbox interface, but finishing them requires you to step outside of the console-like environment.

AI Features and Future Potential

The Ally X includes a Z2E AI processor, differentiating it from other models. Current AI features include co-pilot game assistance and highlight reel creation. Co-pilot integrates with the Xbox Game Bar, providing in-game help when you're stuck.

You can describe your location or mission, and it will offer guidance without needing to leave the game to search online. Highlight reels automatically capture moments worth saving.

The most exciting upcoming feature is ASR (Automatic Super Resolution). While not available yet, ASR aims to upscale visuals at the OS level, improving image quality without requiring developer-side support.

Future AI applications could extend into frame generation and further optimization. Until then, ASR remains a feature to watch for rather than one you can currently use.

Final Thoughts

The Xbox Ally and Ally X bring the strengths of PC gaming to a handheld form factor, wrapped in a console-like interface. They provide impressive flexibility, from running PlayStation games to supporting multiple launchers.

However, they also inherit some of the quirks and restrictions of being Windows-based, such as an inability to resume quickly and irregular sleep/wake cycles. These handhelds are positioned as strong, flexible platforms that conflate PC and console experiences, with the promise of further AI advancements.
