Crimson Desert is presently performing inconsistently on handheld devices such as the ROG Xbox Ally X, primarily due to persistent driver difficulties and optimization constraints.

Depending on the version of the GPU driver, stability can change. You can play the game, but the resolution, frame rate, and graphical fidelity may not be as good as they could be.

Driver Issues and Rollback Experience

We are taking a look at Crimson Desert, and the performance here is a bit iffy sometimes. We do need to be running on the older October-dated driver that we just got updated from this week to the new driver. They say March 18 on the website. It is a February-dated driver, but it crashes the game.

On the newer driver that we just got, the GPU driver, things get pretty rough, and the game freezes up within a minute or less, typically when in, especially if we try to move or do anything. We get about 30 seconds of movement, and then it freezes up again. This keeps happening repeatedly.

To test the game properly, we reluctantly rolled back drivers. We have the latest driver on the website, but some people have said that it remaps buttons and causes other problems. With that in mind, we went back to the earlier driver by downloading it and using DDU to delete it. This technique is simple, and there are several guides that explain it. After running DDU and reinstalling the older driver fresh, we used the October-dated driver to test stability.

With this setup, even though performance was not exactly where we would like it to be, the game was no longer crashing at all.

1080p Performance and Settings

At 1080p using FSR performance mode on the low preset, performance varies depending on the scene. We can expect around 30fps to 50fps, sometimes hovering around 40fps. However, performance drops significantly later during flying sections, heavy NPC presence, or combat scenarios.

Switching to the minimum preset gives a slight boost. We see around 49fps compared to the previous 40fps–42fps range, providing a bit of extra headroom even at 1080p.

If we increase settings to medium while keeping ray tracing enabled, performance takes a major hit. It struggles to maintain smooth gameplay, and even with frame caps or frame generation, it feels rough and visually inconsistent.

Disabling ray tracing while staying on medium still results in relatively low performance, and it becomes less viable in demanding scenes despite improved visuals.

720p Performance and Optimization

With medium settings and ray tracing disabled, performance goes up to about 40 fps in lighter areas at 720p. In most gameplay situations, though, it changes between 25 and 45 fps.

When you go to the low preset at 720p, performance goes up much further, reaching about 50fps. Using FSR quality mode at this resolution improves visual clarity while maintaining most of the performance gains, making it a solid balance between visuals and smoothness.

When deciding between 720p, 900p, and 1080p, 720p often provides the most stable experience overall.

Frame Generation and Scaling Options

The game includes in-game frame generation, which works reasonably well in many situations. However, it can become unstable or "janky" in certain areas, especially during fast movement or combat.

At 720p, frame generation performs better, while at 1080p it tends to introduce more issues. If preferred, lossless scaling can also be used by capping the game at 30fps and doubling it to 60fps for smoother output. However, frame generation is not always ideal in combat-heavy gameplay where responsiveness matters more.

Recommended Playable Settings

At 1080p, using the low preset with medium textures, FSR 3 performance mode, 25W power, and 8GB VRAM delivers the most decent-looking playable experience. Even then, performance dips and inconsistencies are still present.

Overall, the game feels unoptimized on handheld hardware right now. There are both good and bad performance areas, and things are likely to get rougher in later stages of gameplay. Future patches and driver updates are expected to improve stability and performance, especially once current GPU driver issues are resolved.

For now, players can experiment with these settings and decide whether the experience is acceptable or worth waiting for further optimization.
