It's an important juncture in Valve's hardware intentions this June. The first half of 2026 Steam release window is approaching, and recent SteamOS updates suggest preparations might be nearing completion. Meanwhile, Steam Deck price hikes are spreading out in various regions, while a busy September release calendar is keeping PC gamers busy with new games to look forward to.

There's less than a month until Valve's Steam Machine and Steam Frame launch in the first half of 2026. A good indicator is the recent SteamOS update, which adds several features, particularly targeted at the Steam Machine.

Steam Machine Release Appears to be Close

SteamOS has been gradually updated over the past few times to support new hardware, and SteamOS 1.0 brings a nice tour. Optionally, the feature will display the SteamOS interface to users the first time they turn on a device. It introduces features such as opening the quick access menu, adjusting GPU MHz, limiting the frame rate, using the Steam button to navigate the interface, and expanding storage via the SD card slot.

It also indicates that Valve is getting closer to launch, as they are planning a welcome tour. Prices and release details were among the similar onboarding features that appeared for the Steam Controller just before the official announcement.

Summer Game Fest has also raised eyebrows. You're in luck if you used the hashtag #steam; a comment on a social media post made its way onto Steam because the users had to search for it specifically to find the animation. Showcase teasers have usually been rife with useless speculation, but this one has sparked discussion about an announcement.

Expectations remain cautious. These days, development cycles are far longer, and there are fewer E3 first-party reveals from big publishers than in the past. Numerous studios have gone out of business, and major games can take years to develop. This means that there are often fewer big first-party news items in large showcases.

Whether it's Summer Game Fest or not, there's been a lot of anticipation of an announcement from Valve since November. The official pricing and release information have not been announced for over six months.

Prices for the PC Gaming Hardware Remain a Concern

One of the most unanswered questions on the Steam Machine is the price. Initial estimates put the price at around $800. Depending on the configuration, 512GB of storage space with no controller may be approaching that goal, and the higher-end models may be more expensive.

Valve is increasingly under pressure to make the hardware available sooner rather than later. Memory prices have become a major concern for the industry. Prices seemed to have stabilized earlier this year, but have climbed back up.

The general market conditions are illustrated in a few recent products. Reports now indicate the Legion Go 2 is priced at approximately $2,000. ROG Ally X20 is likely to come with a high price tag because of its OLED screen and extras. Steam Deck has also seen many price hikes, whereas the Legion Go S is close to $1,000.

The price hikes have spread to handheld PCs. PlayStation hardware is more expensive, and Nintendo hardware is up as well. Based on industry trends, hardware is currently under pressure rather than improving. While some fans still cling to the faith that it'll be even cheaper for a long while yet, gaming PCs have tended to be more expensive than other types.

The traditional appeal of consoles was that they could offer gamers a PC-like experience for half the price. Handheld gaming PCs got off to a good start at around $400, but rising component costs have pushed them into the $600 to $1,000 range.

The Rising Price of the Steam Deck is a Worldwide Issue

There will be no further price increases for the Steam Deck in the US market. Komodo just revealed new pricing for the Steam Deck OLED 512GB and 1TB in several regions. Steam Deck OLED 512GB is up 38 percent from $763 in Japan. The 1 TB variant has jumped to about $1,051. These increases exceed current pricing in the US market.

Other charges, such as shipping, customs, and local transportation, could raise prices. Whatever the reasons, the hikes make it difficult for customers in areas where Valve is still building its market. The situation is occurring in several areas, including Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

The higher the price, the more difficult it will be to attract new players to gaming handhelds.

The overall lesson is that the major price increase in hardware is a worldwide phenomenon, not a US phenomenon. There are indications that price pressures will persist in the industry for the foreseeable future. Recent changes to SteamOS suggest that the Steam Machine and Steam Frame may be coming soon. The first half of Valve's 2026 is almost over.

At the same time, game hardware prices have been rising, leading to steep price increases for the Steam Deck in many places. Those are some tough hurdles to jump, but September's slate of big releases has enough to keep PC gamers of the world busy. Several interesting titles will be landing in the Steam Deck's upcoming months as well as in any future Steam Machines.
