Three Medal of Honor Servers Shutdown February 16th

Online features for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 games scheduled to close

Online servers for three games in EA's Medal of Honor franchise will shut down on 16th February. The games (which were released on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3) are 2007's Medal of Honor: Airborne, 2010's Medal of Honor, and 2012's Medal of Honor: Warfighter.

The Medal of Honor franchise began in 1999 as a collaboration between film director Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks Interactive and EA. Medal of Honor: Airborne was the eleventh game in the series and saw the player control a US paratrooper during the Second World War. The series was rebooted in 2010, titled Medal of Honor. It moved the action to a more contemporary setting, following a handful of characters in Afghanistan during the Bush administration, including a Navy SEAL and U.S. Army Ranger. Finally, Medal of Honor: Warfighter was a direct sequel to the reboot and continued the series' new narrative. DreamWorks Interactive became EA Los Angeles in 2000 and eventually Danger Close Games in 2010. Danger Close Games were formed to focus solely on the Medal of Honor franchise but closed in 2013 when the series was put on hiatus.

While Respawn Entertainment did release a VR game, Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, in 2020; EA have been quiet in regard to the franchise since. Publishers closing down online servers of older games is par for the course currently (EA themselves are also shutting down Madden NFL 21 on February 28th), but there is a sense of inevitability about the Medal of Honor franchise's fate. The highly influential series, while one for the history books, has long been overshadowed by its cooler, more successful younger brother Call of Duty. Which was, ironically,  created by several ex-Medal of Honor developers.
