The sequel to Hideo Kojima's 2019 genre-defying action game, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which came out on June 26, exclusively on PlayStation 5, has already gotten a lot of attention and was nominated for The Game Awards 2024 for Most Anticipated Game. But a surprising detail in the game's credits has led to new speculation about the title's future, maybe even outside of Sony's ecosystem.
Fans quickly learned that Nintendo Pictures, a part of Nintendo, worked on motion capture for Death Stranding 2. This surprising detail shocked the gaming community, especially since Sony is the game's official publisher. Sources suggest, however, that this partnership may not be as unexpected as it initially appears. Dynamo Pictures was the name of the company before it became Nintendo Pictures. It was a visual production company that worked on the first Death Stranding.

Nintendo acquired the company and changed its name in 2022, likely after most of the work on the sequel had been completed. This timeline suggests that the motion capture contribution occurred before Nintendo acquired the company, but many fans are now wondering if this connection could lead to a future Switch 2 release. Although nothing has been confirmed, the conversation has sparked new interest in how Kojima's intellectual property (IP) might expand beyond the PlayStation platform.
Even though Sony is publishing the game, Kojima Productions still owns the Death Stranding IP. Last year, the studio issued a press release confirming this fact. It said that it "will continue its focus on bringing its award-winning IP, Death Stranding, to more platforms and audiences." This has already led to the original Death Stranding being ported to PC and Xbox Series X/S, a move that is not often seen with other Sony-published games.
Reports indicate that the exclusivity deal with Sony for the first game has expired, which gives Kojima Productions more freedom to expand the franchise. A YouTuber called Wood (BeatEmUps) said that there are rumors that a port of the first Death Stranding will be announced for the Switch 2 at a Nintendo Direct in July. If this is true, it could mean that Nintendo has a bigger plan to bring the whole franchise to its next-generation console.
This would be a significant change for a series that has always been linked to PlayStation hardware. And more importantly, it would set a precedent that could affect when and how Death Stranding 2: On the Beach could also come out on new platforms.
However, analysts have been quick to point out that Nintendo's support for motion capture doesn't mean that a Switch 2 is on the way. Nintendo Pictures' involvement, especially when it was called Dynamo Pictures, is probably a legacy partnership rather than a strategic move toward porting. The collaboration doesn't hurt the chances of a Switch 2 version, but it also doesn't give any direct proof of one.
However, the gaming industry is changing these days. Timed releases, cross-platform licensing, and shared IP deals are replacing traditional exclusivity. These give creators like Hideo Kojima more control over how their work is distributed. Kojima is known for having big ideas and wanting to reach more people. He has talked openly about bringing his games to more people around the world.

There are still technical problems, though. Guerrilla Games, a Sony-owned studio, made the Decima Engine that Death Stranding 2 runs on. This engine has run graphically demanding games like Horizon Forbidden West. Porting it to the Switch 2 would take a lot of work to make it run better, especially if Nintendo's new hardware can't keep up with the PS5. But earlier Decima-powered games have shown that you can effectively scale visual fidelity.
Another sign of Death Stranding 2's quality and ambition is the team of artists who worked on it. Ludvig Forssell and Woodkid wrote a great musical score for the movie, which naturally. Hideo Kojima is the writer, director, and producer. The game keeps going into deep themes of connection, isolation, and survival in the future, all set in a mysterious world after the end of the world.
For now, Sony is still the only publisher, but both fans and industry experts are keeping a close eye on things. Kojima Productions has said that they want the Death Stranding universe to grow, and a Switch 2 version may come out sooner than expected.
Right now, Nintendo Pictures' role in making the game should be seen as a technical one, not a marketing or platform-related one. But it does add another interesting layer to Death Stranding 2's journey, which is already full of new ideas and secrets.
In today's gaming world, where creative partnerships make it hard to tell which platforms are competing with each other, the future of Death Stranding 2 may be just as unpredictable as the game's strange terrain. Now that the PS5 is out, fans are already looking to see where Sam Porter Bridges might go next.
