The official rating brings a closer look at violence, drugs, language, and in-game purchases ahead of the game’s November 2026 release.

Grand Theft Auto VI has officially received its mature rating, and the attached information gives you a clearer idea of how far Rockstar is pushing in the next open-world crime game. The PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X|S listings for Grand Theft Auto VI have moved beyond “Rating Pending,” with the game now carrying an M for Mature rating in the United States.
That rating covers blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and drug and alcohol use. None of those categories are especially surprising for the series, but the rating board's detailed descriptions offer new information about what you can actually do in the game.

The timing is also notable.
The last time you saw the game without a final rating was during its extended look, which still carried a “Rating Pending" notice alongside an expected Mature 17+ classification. Now, the official rating makes it another step closer to launch. For Grand Theft Auto VI, that distinction matters because ratings usually arrive much later in development and can reveal content that marketing material leaves deliberately vague.
The European rating information is even more revealing. The game has received a PEGI 18 classification, meaning it is restricted to adults, with strong graphic violence, strong sexual themes, and illegal drug use specifically cited as reasons for the rating.
The listing also confirms that the release date remains November 19, 2026, despite an incorrect date appearing elsewhere on the page for the PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X|S versions. The basic description of Grand Theft Auto VI doesn't introduce much you haven't already heard.
You play as Jason Duval or Lucia Caminos in Leonida, a fictional state containing the game’s large open world. The two criminals get caught in a wider criminal conspiracy after a robbery goes wrong, forcing them to work together as they become increasingly involved in criminal activity.
Your time in the world includes driving and stealing vehicles, robbing businesses, fighting non-player characters, exploring the map, and taking part in high-speed police chases. It is essentially the familiar Grand Theft Auto formula, but the rating information starts getting much more interesting once it moves beyond that basic description.
Violence is described as frequent and highly realistic.
Because the world is open and free-roaming, you can attack civilians, criminals, and law enforcement characters. The violence is also explicitly described as bloody, with some weapons capable of causing detailed decapitation and dismemberment. That gives you a stronger indication of the level of graphic detail being used for combat and other violent encounters.

Drug use is another major part of the rating. Illegal drugs are not simply something you encounter during scripted moments. The description says you can carry drugs in your inventory and use them directly. Cocaine is specifically mentioned, with the rating information stating that you can carry it and snort it from your hand at any time.
Sexual content also appears to be receiving more attention than in previous games. The rating information mentions nudity, intercourse, and occasional sexual fetishes. Nightclubs are also singled out, with private dances that let you interact physically with dancers. Several locations are referenced, including the Jack of Hearts, the 919, and the Delight Strip Club in Port Gellhorn.
That means the mature content is not limited to background material or cutscenes. Some of it is tied directly to activities you can choose to participate in while exploring the world. Grand Theft Auto VI also includes animals throughout its environment, and the player can harm them. However, the rating distinguishes between animals and human characters, explaining that animals do not receive the same level of injury detail.
Previous information indicates the game features 170 animal species, so the rating confirms that at least some of those creatures can be affected by the player's actions.
Language is similarly strong. The rating mentions frequent use of the F-word, along with occasional use of the C-word. Discriminatory language can also appear through television programs and radio broadcasts, adding another layer to the adult content found throughout the fictional state of Leonida.
The game also has an in-game purchases classification. That doesn't necessarily mean you should assume the game centers on microtransactions or the return of purchasable currency. The available information suggests you can play the game without buying those items, but the rating category doesn't explain exactly what the purchases involve.
One likely explanation is that the category could cover additional editions or upgrades rather than directly confirming a specific microtransaction system. The game already has different editions, and console listings show an option to upgrade from a Standard Edition to an Ultimate Edition. Until Rockstar explains exactly what the in-game purchase classification refers to, it is better not to treat it as confirmation of a particular monetization feature.

Interestingly, casinos do not appear in the PEGI content description, despite known indications that gambling locations exist within the game world. Two casino locations have been identified from available footage and other information: one in Vice City based on Casino Miami, and another in Buckskin resembling the Miccosukee Casino & Resort.
Their absence from the rating description does not necessarily mean they are missing, but it leaves some uncertainty about how prominently those locations will feature.
The Australian classification gives you another useful comparison. Grand Theft Auto VI has been rated across themes, violence, language, drug use, nudity, and sex, and several of those categories are stronger than in earlier Rockstar releases.
Grand Theft Auto V received Strong Impact ratings for themes, violence, language, and sex, while drug use was classified as High Impact and nudity was also marked Strong Impact. Red Dead Redemption 2 received Strong Impact ratings for themes and violence, with language, drug use, nudity, and sex in the Moderate Impact category.
For Grand Theft Auto VI, themes remain at Strong Impact, while violence rises to High Impact. Language stays at Strong Impact, and drug use is again rated High Impact. Nudity remains at Strong Impact, but sex also climbs to High Impact.
That makes violence and sexual content the clearest areas where the new game stands apart from those previous releases. The ratings do not reveal every feature or activity you will find across Leonida, and Grand Theft Auto VI still has plenty of room for surprises. Still, they do provide a surprisingly detailed snapshot of the game’s adult content.
You now have confirmation that the violence can become extremely graphic, drugs can be used directly from your inventory, sexual content is more prominent, animals can be harmed with reduced injury detail, and strong language will be present throughout the world.

For Grand Theft Auto VI, the final rating also removes one small piece of uncertainty that has followed the game since its extended look.
Instead of being listed as "Rating Pending,” the game is now officially classified as Mature in the United States and 18 in Europe. Rockstar has also updated its social media branding to reflect the finalized rating. With the November 19, 2026 release date still on track, these ratings suggest the game is moving into a new phase of its rollout.
We still don't know everything Rockstar has planned, but the rating disclosures answer a few questions without needing a new trailer or gameplay reveal. The bigger takeaway is that the adult content isn't just a carryover from the older games. Australia's higher violence and sex impact ratings, plus the detailed PEGI descriptions, show Rockstar is again building around mature themes.
And this time, you'll interact with them more directly. Grand Theft Auto VI now has its official mature classification, giving you a clearer picture of the experience Rockstar is preparing. You can expect the familiar open-world crime formula, but with graphic violence, direct drug use, stronger sexual content, extensive language, and a large animal population all forming part of the experience.
