The second season of Marathon from Bungie is official, and once it launches on June 2, 2026, it’s guaranteed that there will be some significant changes to the game. As in previous seasons, all players’ vaults will be wiped clean at the start of the new season, and new content will be added to the game.
As in the first season, Bungie is testing different approaches and play styles to determine which will best serve the game in the long run. Perhaps one of the most surprising additions that can be found during Season 2 of Marathon is a dedicated PvE game mode. This information was provided by game director Joe Ziegler himself, who commented on the launch of the first season. The addition is surprising because Marathon has always been geared toward PVP, not PvE.

In the conversation, Bungie shared insights into its original vision for Marathon before release.
The studio discussed the disparity between the connection it anticipated from players and the experience they had after playing the game. They also considered what they have learned so far and how the game's development might change based on their experiences in their first season.
One of those discussions involved some blunt criticism of the issues surrounding the game. As Bungie stated, the developers openly admitted that Marathon is quite an intimidating game for new players who struggle to get used to its mechanics and win matches. Moreover, even if players overcome this initial challenge, they are likely to experience a negative downward spiral and lose several matches in a row.
In other words, this appears to be one of the core motivations for Bungie's plans to make substantial changes in the upcoming Season 2. Given the studio's previous discussions, it's clear that Bungie takes the problem seriously.
The PvE-only mode especially feels like a response to that feedback. Many players have been clamoring for a softer version of the game, and it seems Bungie is willing to step outside its comfort zone and try something different to keep existing players and attract new ones who might not have joined because of the game's difficulty.
This is quite an important change, since Marathon was designed around its competitive extraction game loop. Taking away the entire PvP component for another game mode is certainly a big step, but it seems like Bungie is up for the challenge in order to balance out the player pool.

On the other hand, there remains much doubt whether the above-listed alterations will indeed suffice to help Marathon recover.
Despite the introduction of fresh content and the PvE mode, some questions remain about the title's ability to recapture its momentum after its first season. However, given Bungie's history, this is not something the company has encountered before, either. In this case, one may recall the history of Destiny 2, a game that has endured many hardships before finally pulling through and reviving players' interest.
Needless to say, the pattern of causing these kinds of problems before fixing itself is a familiar one for Bungie. The struggle, revival, and eventual recovery have now become synonymous with Bungie games by this point. As far as whether Marathon will follow suit, we will see. But judging from Season 2, it is evident that Bungie wants to give gamers the impression that something is changing rather than everything staying the same.
