Marvel's Spider-Man isn't Coming to Xbox—But Here's Why the Rumors Won't Die

Insomniac's innocent tweet sparked a frenzy of speculation, but the truth is simpler than you think: Sony's web-slinging superhero isn't swinging onto Xbox anytime soon.

Insomniac's journey with Marvel's Spider-Man has been really great so far. From the first game to the latest PC port, fans just can't get enough of the series. Despite Marvel's Spider-Man 2's initial technical issues on Steam, the PC port was well-received, and fans began to hope that Marvel's Spider-Man would also be released on Xbox. Sony's plan to release Helldivers 2 on Xbox has revved this longing, especially how future gaming seems to be shaping up through Sony and Microsoft's multiplatform strategy.

This week, Insomniac Games, known for making Marvel's Spider-Man games, sent out a harmless tweet. "Hey, how are you?" was written next to a simple picture of Peter Parker. There was no announcement, teaser, or mention of the platform. However, this is the internet, and more specifically, X (formerly Twitter), where a simple two-word hello can lead to crazy ideas, fan art, and viral delusions.

Within hours, there were a lot of replies from Xbox fans asking if Spider-Man was finally coming to Xbox. Fans began making Xbox-branded box art that started going around. There were numerous posts with questions like "So, Spider-Man 2018 is coming to Xbox?" and "Looks good wrapped in green." Additionally, these replies weren't just one-offs; they garnered thousands of likes, retweets, and shares.

What's going on then? Is this guess based on anything real?

To cut to the chase, Marvel's Spider-Man is not coming to Xbox. There's neither an official announcement nor a reliable report to suggest that's what's going on. To be honest, the idea contradicts Sony's entire first-party strategy.

Sony has worked hard to make sure that its most popular story-based PlayStation exclusive titles. PlayStation is renowned for its video game franchises, including Spider-Man, God of War, The Last of Us, and Horizon. These games aren't just goods; they sell systems. Letting them roam onto competing consoles would be like Apple putting Android on iPhones before they are sold.

Still, the confusion isn't completely unfounded. Not long ago, Sony announced that Helldivers 2, a different game they had published, would be coming to Xbox. A lot of people were surprised by that, especially since Sony is known for putting up a fortress wall around its exclusives.

However, here's what makes them different: The main goal of Helldivers 2 is to make money for Sony and retain players. Sony will make money if they puts that kind of game out on more than one platform, since the company loves microtransactions and having a big community. More people play, more money. It makes sense.

Spider-Man, on the other hand, is a story-driven, single-player game that stands alone. That's it when you're done. There is no battle pass, online hub, or holiday events. You play it, have fun with it, and then move on. Aside from DLC, there's no other way to make money after the initial sale. Sony has no reason to make this kind of game available on more than one platform.

Yes, the first Spider-Man game was released in 2018, and it did come out on PC in 2022. But we'll talk about that another time. Sony has made it clear that PC, not Xbox, is a part of their long-term plan. Hermen Hulst, who is in charge of PlayStation Studios, recently said that the company wants to be "thoughtful" about how it brings games to other platforms. PC ports help reach new people while still keeping PlayStation as the only console that can play them. The Xbox, on the other hand, is a direct rival and not a neutral platform.

Still, some online fans are unaware of the difference between these business models or choose not to acknowledge it. As if Helldivers 2 and Spider-Man were the same thing, they put them together. They're not, though. Sony is aware of this. If PlayStation started giving Xbox its best games, like Spider-Man, what would keep PlayStation alive? They don't want to cross that line.

Take a look at what's going on with Microsoft. Xbox has been putting its own games on PC, PlayStation, and even the Nintendo Switch. What does it lead to? There's not really a good reason to own an Xbox in the year 2025. Why play Xbox if you can play Halo or Starfield somewhere else? Sony knows this, and they won't make the same mistake again.

So the Spider-Man rumor is just that—a rumor—and it will stay that way. We won't let tweets, memes, or fake box art spread; the game isn't coming to Xbox. Not right now, not soon, and most likely never. One thing you'll need is a PlayStation to play Insomniac's Spider-Man games on a console. That easy.
