Handheld gaming PCs now deliver desktop-class performance, flexible operating systems, and multiple price points for portable AAA gaming.

The handheld gaming PC market continues to grow as more devices bring PC gaming performance into a portable form factor. Valve helped establish the category with the Steam Deck, but newer handhelds are bringing higher performance, different operating systems, larger displays, and more hardware options.

When Microsoft announced the Xbox Ally X in June 2025, it was not immediately clear what to make of it. Microsoft teamed up with ASUS to create an Xbox version of the ROG Ally X. The driving factor was to pilot a new version of Windows 11 that would be more controller-friendly. Now that the ASUS ROG Ally X is here, we can declare that the partnership has been successful.

Mostly, the Xbox full-screen experience at the core of the Xbox Ally X still needs some polish, but it changes how you interact with a handheld gaming PC. Most people who primarily use Xbox Game Pass and Steam will rarely need to use the desktop beyond initiating Windows updates or installing apps like Discord.

Rather than booting directly into the usual Windows desktop, the system boots into a full-screen version of the Xbox app. From there, you can download and install third-party stores such as Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store, and launch games installed through these services. You still have to use these apps to download and install the games.

The launchers open in full-screen mode, so you don't have to go to the desktop, but that also means you depend on the controller, and controller support varies by app. Steam is easy to use with a controller, while the Epic Games Store requires touchscreen navigation.

As for performance, the ROG Ally X hit up to 44 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 on high settings. Even on battery power, it managed 30-35fps in Cyberpunk, except in demanding areas such as Dogtown. If you can accept the $999 price, the Xbox Ally X is one handheld gaming PC to consider.

Lenovo Legion Go S

When the Lenovo Legion Go S first came out in February 2025, it had problems. Z2 Go processor held back the configuration, which didn't work well with Windows, even with 32GB of memory. The weaker handheld was also priced close to, or above, the original Legion Go.

Lenovo is now changing direction by launching the Go S with the Z1 Extreme and built-in SteamOS. The system is still expensive, but the SteamOS-powered handheld beat the Ally X in synthetic benchmarks by up to 9%. Steam Deck is still in the mix. Even with its recent price increases, it remains cheaper than the Go S. However, the Legion Go S offers a higher-resolution display and up to double the performance.

We saw a solid 60fps while playing Baldur's Gate 3, something that is not possible on the old Steam Deck. A handheld gaming system is about more than raw performance. It also needs to be comfortable to use.

Despite the system being one of the largest handhelds we have used, it remains comfortable to hold. The Legion Go S has rounded edges that give you something to hold. The Go S also has an LCD display, showing that OLED isn't the only way to get a good picture in 2026.

MSI Claw 8 EX AI Plus

When Intel launched its Panther Lake laptop chips at CES 2026, the possibility of seeing them in handhelds was already on the table. MSI Claw 8 EX AI Plus is not perfect, and if you have small hands, its size can be a problem. This is a large handheld gaming PC, but that physical size comes with performance.

You can turn some settings up in games such as Crimson Desert and Cyberpunk while still getting usable frame rates. This is one of the first handhelds we tested with the new Intel Arc G3 Extreme chip, and it outperformed the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme in testing.

MSI Claw 8 EX AI Plus is priced the same as the Lenovo Legion Go right now, but it is up to 55% faster. That is a significant change only 8 months after Lenovo's handheld reached the market. MSI Claw 8 EX AI Plus also has an LCD panel with high brightness and color accuracy. However, at $1,799, the price is difficult to justify. At that price, we would still want an OLED panel.

Xbox Ally gets more useful when you install SteamOS or Bazzite.

Since this version of the Xbox Ally comes with only 16GB of RAM, Windows doesn't always run well. During testing, the Xbox full-screen experience froze several times. If you have technical experience, we recommend installing Bazzite or SteamOS to avoid some Windows issues. ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X sits at the top of these recommendations for performance and software integration, while the Lenovo Legion Go S offers Z1 Extreme performance with SteamOS.

MSI Claw 8 EX AI Plus brings Intel Arc G3 Extreme performance to the category, while the base ASUS ROG Xbox Ally provides a lower-cost option. For anyone looking to take PC gaming on the go, these systems show how far handheld gaming PCs have moved beyond the original Steam Deck formula.
