If you are starting in Hades II or preparing for your first runs, understanding the core mechanics and priorities will help you make steady progress.

This guide avoids final boss details but touches on early upgrades, resource management, and combat approaches that you should focus on.

Using the Cast Effectively

In Hades 2, the cast system works differently from the first game. Casting creates a large circle that traps enemies, keeping them away, which is helpful since Melinoë has only one Dash. You can use this to charge an Omega ability from a safe spot in Hades II.

The game also lets you drop a cast while charging Omega, so you don't need to cancel your action. Choosing the right Boon early is crucial. Demeter's freezing cast is useful early, immobilizing groups and creating openings.

Though less important later, it helps at the start. Hestia's Smolder Ring applies Scorch in an area, especially with upgrades like Pyro Technique and Freezer Burn. Zeus's storm offers substantial single-target damage but no area coverage.

Managing Resources

Early in the game, you'll find core resources: Ash unlocks Arcana Cards, Bones are used as currency for the Wretched Broker, Nectar helps build relationships and unlock Keepsakes, and Psyche increases your Grasp, allowing more Arcana. Grasp upgrades are on the right side of the Arcana screen in Hades II.

Focus on doors that give Ash early rewards, but get Psyche first if you can, since it's harder to get. Gather plants and other small items to make incantations at Hecate's Cauldron, which are necessary to move forward. Don't skip talking to NPCs that are marked with exclamation points because they often have side tasks and ways to move forward.

Unlocking Arcana Cards

Arcana Cards are a key early investment for Ash. Start with Sorceress, then unlock Wayward Son, The Furies, Persistence, and Death, which balance damage and survivability, with Death Defiance vital early on. These cards total 10 Grasp, fitting your early capacity in Hades II.

After expanding Grasp, unlock Huntress: Deprioritize Eternity, The Messenger, and Swiftrunner. Then unlock The Centaur to reach Origination, which boosts damage when two curses are applied. Later, you'll unlock incantations for Arcana upgrades.

Maximizing the Staff

While limited to the Staff early on, you can improve its effectiveness by combining attacks with specials. Instead of spamming one option, use an attack followed directly by a special to increase your output.

Dash attacks chained into specials also allow more mobility during fights. This minor adjustment makes early combat smoother in Hades II.

Understanding Power

Power, which stands for base harm, is a new mechanic in Hades 2. Increasing your power makes percentage-based buffs work better, like Aphrodite's attack or special.

Spend money on power if your build already has high percentage boosts. On the other hand, if your base damage is already high, adding more percentage raises will make things better.

Fighting Hecate

If you Dash at the right time, you can avoid Hecate's Sheep Attack. You can still hit and Dash when you're transformed, but they won't work as well. During this time, hitting Trees can hurt Witches who are behind them in Hades II.

When Hecate makes copies of herself, the real one can be told apart from the fakes by listening for sounds, since only the real Hecate talks. Also, any state effects, like Scorch, stay on the real version, which helps you keep track of her.

Selecting Keepsakes

Choosing the right Keepsakes early helps manage runs. Odysseus's Knuckle Bones is reliable against bosses, while Skelly's Luckier Tooth adds a Death Defiance, another strong early pick. Moros's Keepsake is worth obtaining once it becomes available.

Next, focus on Olympian god Keepsakes. They guarantee a Boon from the chosen god and increase the first Boon's rarity. After gifting all Olympian gods, you'll unlock a Codex incantation to view all Boons in Hades II.

Dealing with Eris

You'll meet Eris early, appearing during initial runs. On the first three runs to the second zone, she grants the Blessing of Strife, boosting damage by 20% plus 5% per encounter. Then, she moves to the third zone for three runs, then the fourth zone, disappearing after about ten attempts.

If you are a new player, Eris can be pretty challenging. To avoid her, ending a boss fight with under 50% health and no remaining Death Defiances stops her from appearing in the next zone, but this must be done each time in Hades II.

Beginner Build Options

When experimenting with builds, focus on Blitz and Scorch. Pair Zeus's attack or special with Hestia's cast for a solid foundation, and unlock their duo Boon, Thermodynamics. Boons like Pyro Technique and Double Strike boost this setup, which is applicable across all weapons.

For Daggers, quick attacks benefit from on-hit effects like Poseidon's splash or Hestia's Scorch. Poseidon's attack can unlock his legendary Boon, while Hestia's pairs well with Pyro Technique or Freezer Burn in Hades II.

For Torches, early Hammer choices matter, but Zeus's attack with sustained fire is effective. Hestia's Magic Regen and Boons, such as Ocean Swell, add effects.

For Axe, focus on attack and whirlwind moves, not the special. Apollo's or Aphrodite's attack Boons synergize well. Charge whirlwinds between phases or waves, and Dash after charging to reposition in Hades II.
